NEWS: Pupils to study Twitter and blogs in primary schools shake-up (UK)

Children will no longer have to study the Victorians or the second world war under proposals to overhaul the primary school curriculum, the Guardian has learned.

However, the draft plans will require children to master Twitter and Wikipedia and give teachers far more freedom to decide what youngsters should be concentrating on in classes.

The proposed curriculum, which would mark the biggest change to primary schooling in a decade, strips away hundreds of specifications about the scientific, geographical and historical knowledge pupils must accumulate before they are 11 to allow schools greater flexibility in what they teach.

PRESS RELEASES: Young Reader Prize Adds Press Freedom Category

Paris, 24 March 2009 - For immediate release

Young Reader Prize Adds Press Freedom Category

The World Young Reader Prize, an annual award from the World Association of Newspapers to recognise newspapers that do the most to develop young readership, has added a press free
dom category to honour newspapers that teach effectively about the fragility and importance of press freedom in a democratic society.

The deadline for the press f
reedom award is 15 April. The award will be announced on 3 May, World Press Freedom Day and presented at the 8th World Young Reader Conference, to be held on 27 to 30 September in Prague.

Judges for the special press freedom category will be WAN Golden Pe
n laureates Doan Viet Hoat (Vietnam) and Pius Njawe (Cameroon) and Nayla Tueni, daughter of assassinated Lebanese publisher Gebran Tueni.

In addition to the new Press Freedom category, WAN has created a new “Making the News” category that honours innovative projects that allow young people to try their hand as journalists. Other categories are Editorial, Brand, Public Service and Newspapers in Education. Deadline for all but the press freedom category is 5 June.

The World Young Reader Prizes are awarded annually to innovative newspapers that have devised, in the judges' opinion, the best project or activity in the past 24 months in one or more of the main areas of young reader development. "Young reader" refers to those under age 25.

The prize is sponsored by the paper manufacturer Norske Skog as part of its support for WAN’s young readership development activities.

Full details about the prize can be found at http://www.wan-press.org/worldyoungreaderprize

WAN is also reinforcing other initiatives that engage young people in the defence of press freedom and that encourage teachers to make sure that young people understand the importance of, and threats to, press freedom.

These include:

- Creation of a Facebook group called, “Show Your Face to Free Shi Tao,” where Facebook users are encouraged to download posters of the jailed Chinese journalist and upload photos of themselves posing with it and their local newspaper. Information about the group can be found at http://www.wan-press.org/nie/articles.php?id=1923

- Creating new exercises and materials on press freedom themes for parents and teachers targeting 12- to 16-year olds, with the help of Newspapers in Education experts from Argentina, Belgium, Palestine and Denmark. The exercises incorporate WAN’s 2007-2008 press freedom films, available on YouTube.

The Paris-based WAN, the global organisation for the newspaper industry, defends and promotes press freedom and the professional and business interests of newspapers world-wide. Representing 18,000 newspapers, its membership includes 77 national newspaper associations, newspaper companies and individual newspaper executives in 102 countries, 12 news agencies and 11 regional and world-wide press groups.

NEWS / RESEARCH: Asian youths can’t live without TV, web — poll

Asian youths can't live without TV, web — poll

SINGAPORE, March 24 — Want to get across to Asia's youth? Do it through media or music, with a survey revealing that most spend on average 10 hours a day watching TV, on the Internet, reading magazines or listening to the radio.

In findings bound to cheer advertisers, the annual Synovate Young Asians survey, which polled some 13,000 people aged between 8 and 24, also showed many of these youth have a say over a variety of purchases ranging from their own snacks and clothes to the family holiday and even the family car.

"It's vital that smart marketers continue to engage with these young audiences to build a loyal consumer base," Miranda Cheung, managing director of market research firm Synovate in Singapore, said in a statement.

"With so much time spent each day on media consumption, there is every reason to believe that brand communications have filtered through and influenced purchase decisions," she said.

Nearly a third of young Asians said they plan their day around their favourite TV programmes, hoping to catch every episode, the survey revealed.

NEWS / AWARDS: Youth-produced “Bullets in the Hood” Nominated for New York Emmy Award

Youth-produced "Bullets in the Hood" Nominated for New York Emmy Award

Downtown Community Television Center is honored to announce the nomination of Bullets in the Hood: a Bed-Stuy Story for a New York Emmy Award. Bullets, a documentary about the shooting of one of the filmmakers' best friend by a NYPD officer in 2004, is contending in the "Teen Programming," category, but is the only nominee produced by teenagers themselves. This is a groundbreaking achievement, and DCTV is grateful for the recognition of the dedication and triumph of the young artists behind the film.

Teen filmmakers, Terrence Fisher and Daniel Howard, were documenting the incidences of gun violence in their Brooklyn neighborhoods, after having lost eleven friends between them, when the project took a tragic turn. During the making of their film another of their own was gunned down, only this time the shooter was a New York City police officer, who was not indicted in Stansbury's death.

Terrence Fisher was standing behind best friend Timothy Stansbury, who was unarmed and bound for a birthday party, when Timothy was fatally shot by a housing policeman on the roof of Brooklyn's Louis Armstrong housing project in January 2004. Fisher, 19 at the time, dealt with his loss by picking up a video camera and documenting the tense hours and days after the controversial incident. In collaboration with fellow filmmaker, Daniel Howard, then 18, he produced the multi-award-winning Bullets in the Hood: a Bed-Stuy Story. Bullets is executive-produced by Mami Kuwano and DCTV Co-Founder and celebrated documentarian Jon Alpert.

ShePop: Is the new 'Dora the Explorer' doll too sexy?

Seems moms across the Internet got all whipped up about a new tween Dora the Explorer doll, mostly based on a "teaser silhouette" that Nickelodeon and Mattel released early to generate excitement about the new product. Oops: While there was plenty of excitement, it was more of the "How dare they turn our beloved-if-squeaky heroine into a little hussy?" variety. Yes, from the mysterious outline, the little gal known for her bowl cut and talking backpack appeared to have sexed up quite considerably between the ages of six-ish and 10-ish, with tons of long, flowing hair and a micromini.

Yemen stands out in UNICEF Regional Awards for Media about Children's Rights

SANA'A, MARCH 7 — Yemeni radio program 'From the Children's Memories' has won the first UNICEF Regional Awards for Media on Children's Rights in the radio category.

During each of its 37-minute episodes during Ramadan last year, Yemeni children and adolescents spoke out about incidents which had changed their lives. They expressed their thoughts on various issues, including the sensitive topics of AIDS, terrorism, early marriage and discrimination.

Sameer Al-Madhagi, producer of the program for Yemen's Radio Channel, was happy at the recognition although he admitted that he expected more support.

"It would have been helpful to get some capacity building such as a scholarship to study child rights, or training or anything that would help us improve our performance. After all, we are working hard against all odds to promote children's rights," he said.

NEWS / RADIO: Jordanian Community Radio Station Tackles Issues Affecting Women and Youth

Jordanian Community Radio Station Tackles Issues Affecting Women and Youth

(March 5, 2009) Farah Al Nas, a Internews-founded community radio station in Jordan that focuses on women and youth issues, is tackling topics that are usually taboo on the airwaves.

Based in Amman, the station recently held a week-long campaign dealing with violence against women that featured the voices of women affected by violence. It was a rare moment to hear women talking openly on the air about their experiences of rape and domestic violence.

In January, when a six-year old child was killed by a truck in the residential area of Abu Alanda, community members grew upset at how many children had been injured or killed by trucks passing through that neighborhood. Working with all affected parties, Farah Al Nas held a successful campaign to ban trucks from entering the area.

“I am very happy with what we have achieved so far at Farah Al Nas,” said Haitham Atoom, the station manager. “Our programs are out there, people are listening and we are responsive to their requests. I have great expectations for Farah Al Nas.”

ARTICLES: ‘Arab youth no different from others when handling e-media’

'Arab youth no different from others when handling e-media'

KUWAIT CITY, March 4: The Arab youth is no different from youth anywhere else in the world when it comes to engaging in the electronic media, according to Dr Adel Iskandar, a Canadian scholar on Middle East media who is in Kuwait as part of a 10-nation tour of Arab countries. Dr Iskandar was delivering a lecture on 'Youth Media in the Arab World' Tuesday to students and guests at the American University of Kuwait on the second day of a 3-day speaking engagement under the auspices of the Canadian Embassy in Kuwait. Youth media, according to Dr Iskandar who also delivered a talk on 'Intercultural communication between the West and the Arab world' Monday at the Aware Center in Surra, is, in his words "a broad brush stroke definition — an overarching term he says, that covers a huge territory; and that one can look at some aspect of blogging as a subset in the area of youth media production.

2010 TV opportunity for youth

The 2010 FIFA World Cup offers many obvious benefits for tourism and the economy, but now the global football extravaganza will also help anyone interested in a career in television broadcasting to get a foot in the door.

The Visual Impact Academy will be hosting three-day “digital boot camp” courses in conjunction with Africa Soccer Media to equip people with the skills needed to become production, camera and sound recording assistants before the event.

Ashleigh Martyn of Visual Impact Media has encouraged any media and broadcasting students, as well as school leavers who aren’t sure what they would like to study, to enrol for the course. An interest in sport – and football in particular – would also be to their advantage.

EVENTS: New York International Children's Film Festival (NYICFF)

The New York International Children's Film Festival (NYICFF), which opens this weekend, is the biggest children's film festival in the U.S.

This is not the kind of event where they screen Dr Seuss' Horton Hears Another Who or Madagascar 3: Botswanarama! This is a venue for those budding cineastes between the ages of 3 and 18 for whom this weekend could not be complete without screening a film in the Children and War series — or without judging, alongside jury members John Turturro, Susan Sarandon and Gus Van Sant, the challenging entertainments chosen by the festival. You can't help feeling that if Rush Limbaugh were to come up with his fantasy politically-correct liberal-media-élite pile-on, it would sound a lot like a planning session for the NYICFF.

ICDB / ARTICLES: International Children's Day of Broadcasting: My story, my life

International Children's Day of Broadcasting: My story, my life

If you have only 60 seconds to tell a tale so poignant, what would your story be? Why, only those which delve into the greatest of dreams and hopes, like what 20 teenagers have shown in their videos, writes Chai Mei Ling.

The lines were clean and the row of trees stood nice and green. Then, a hand flashed across the screen, carving black bold lines of factories, cars and smog that choked the canvas. But the hand wasn't done; the masterful strokes came back even more vengeful and rendered the painting a disfigured muck.

The animation on the ghastly effects of greenhouse gasses was what Qusyairi Zazili chose to showcase in his one-minute video at the recently concluded theoneminutesjr workshop in Malacca, the first to be held in Malaysia.

Hosted by United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) and the Education Ministry, the workshop empowered 20 teenagers, many from vulnerable and marginalised communities, to produce personal stories about their dreams, lives and aspirations.

The participants, aged 13 to 18, included children from the Orang Asli community, ethnic minorities from Sabah and Sarawak, disabled children and children living in the shadow of HIV and AIDS.

They were taught film and production skills during the five-day event, as a result of which 20 short clips on a myriad of topics were produced.

ICDB / WORKSHOPS: Malaysian teens reveal their lives and concerns through one-minute videos

Malaysian teens reveal their lives and concerns through one-minute videos

By Indra Kumari Nadchatram

Sunday, 1 March is the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB), when broadcasters around the world open their airwaves to programmes by, for and about children. Here is a story about one related initiative.

BANDARAYA MELAKA, Malaysia, 27 February 2009 – Qusyairi Zazili, 15, is a budding environmentalist with a concern he recently revealed at the first ‘OneMinutesJr’ video workshop hosted in Malaysia by UNICEF and the Ministry of Education.

“All the air pollution, all the open burning, the global warming, it bothers me. I am trying to do my part to save my world for my future generation,” said Qusyairi, who produced a one-minute video called ‘Gas’. “I created a video about the environment, mostly about air pollution. I don’t think the air we all breathe is clean enough. So I am doing my part to spread the message.”
