OPPORTUNITIES / CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: World Bank Film Contest on Climate Change

THE WORLD BANK'S FILM CONTEST ON CLIMATE CHANGE - GRAB YOUR CAMERA AND START FILMING TODAY!!
Watch our call-for-submission video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfcxY6fMDwU

Poor people in developing countries are already more affected by natural disasters. Climate change will only make this worse. Some of these changes are already happening. An Indonesian fisherman may go days without catching any fish. A farmer in Niger struggles to work her land despite diminishing rainfall.

How do you see climate change affecting people’s lives? Have you experienced its effects yourself? Have you seen how it has affected other people? Can you document those effects in a mini-documentary?

The World Bank’s Social Development Department is thrilled to announce the launch of a world-wide documentary competition, "Vulnerability Exposed: Social Dimensions of Climate Change".  We hope to receive submissions of 2-5 minute documentaries which creatively showcase the social implications of climate change in the areas of conflict, migration, urban space, rural institutions, drylands, social policy, indigenous peoples, gender, governance, forests and/or human rights. You can win a trip to Washington, DC for a screening of the films and to attend a series of networking and learning events organized by the World Bank.

ARTICLES: Harvard professor sees answers to nagging Web-youth issues

Harvard professor sees answers to nagging Web-youth issues

John Palfrey, one of Harvard's leading thinkers on the Internet, has recently finished a study on kids raised in the digital age. He now has a few tips to share about Web porn, online piracy, and Sen. John McCain's lack of tech know-how.

Palfrey, a Harvard law professor and director of the school's Berkman Center for Internet & Society, visited CNET's headquarters on Tuesday to discuss the findings of a recent study of a group he calls "digital natives." These are people who don't know life before cell phones, computers, and the Internet.

Palfrey, who wrote a book about the study called Born Digital, was fairly upbeat about the Web's affects on young people. That's not going to surprise too many people as Palfrey is a recognized Internet booster. But after completing 100 "in-depth interviews" with young people, ages 13 to 22, Palfrey sees some possible solutions to problems confronting Web-connected youth.

Turn young pirates into content owners

Kids steal music, according to Palfrey's study. "It's plain that virtually every young person we talked to gets music exactly the same way, which is they are downloading from an Internet site. The vast majority are downloading it illegally from a file-sharing site. A very small number are downloading and paying for it."

UNICEF announces nominees for this year's International Children's Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) Awards

NEW YORK, 16 September 2008 – UNICEF today announced the nominees for the International Children's Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) Awards.  The awards are given by UNICEF for outstanding commitment to the ICDB by television and radio broadcasters.

The winner of the 2008 ICDB Awards will be announced in at an awards ceremony dinner on 18 November 2008 in New York.  The dinner will be hosted by UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Marcus Samuelsson at his restaurant Riingo.

The nominees each won a regional competition and now go on to compete for global honours. This year's nominees come from Angola, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Germany, Ghana, Iran, Nepal, Nigeria, Peru and the United Arab Emirates and represent the best work produced in 2007 for the International Children's Day of Broadcasting, as well as a commitment to youth participation in media.

The International Children's Day of Broadcasting is a day set aside each year to celebrate children's broadcasting and encourages young people to get involved in television and radio broadcasting.  The 2007 ICDB theme, "The World We Want," asked young people to explore the world around them - its joys, its problems and possible solutions.

"These visionary broadcasters have demonstrated creativity in their programming as concrete evidence of their commitment to getting young people's voices heard," says Stephen Cassidy, Chief of UNICEF's Internet, Broadcast and Image Section.  "We are happy to see the increase in radio broadcasters this year, as we strive to recognize the audio medium with the same respect television has received, especially given the importance of radio in many of the world's developing countries."

BOSTON, Sep 10, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Europe's younger generation is leading the way in adoption of web TV services, according to research to be released by Strategy Analytics at this year's IBC convention in Amsterdam, Netherlands. "Our survey suggests that broadcasters have been successful in reaching out to those demographics which have been drifting away from traditional television," says Martin Olausson, Director of Strategy Analytics' Digital Media research. "However, there is no room for complacency -- Europe's youth is ready to move on to alternative sources of online entertainment as soon as they are made available."

MEDIA / OBESITY: Doctors lobby for junk food ad review (AUSTRALIA)

Doctors lobby for junk food ad review

DOCTORS have described as "unconscionable" a decision by the communications regulator not to impose tougher restrictions on junk food advertising that targets children.

A review by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) found little evidence of an association between the TV advertising of junk food and obesity levels in children.

As a result, the authority said it would not recommend any general restrictions be imposed on food and beverage advertising targeting children.

The Australian Medical Association is the latest group to express anger at the media authority's stance.

"It is unconscionable to think that a considered review of children's television standards would not include protecting children from the influence of junk food advertising," association president Rosanna Capolingua said.

NEWS/REPORTS/ICT: New study on children’s use of IT (SWEDEN)

New study on children's use of IT

For the second year in a row, the Swedish Helpline BRIS, Children's Rights in Society, conducted a study on children's Internet and ICT-related contacts. This has now been translated into English. BRIS is calling for improved communication between parents, other adults and children concerning children's experiences on the internet.

Among the contacts surveyed by BRIS, 2,750 were identified as internet or ICT-related. Constituting 47% of the contacts, romantic relationships and friendship were the most common topics. Anonymity on the internet has changed the way relationships with friends and love interests are played out. This can be a cause of distress for children who contact BRIS with issues such as safety when meeting an internet contact IRL (In Real Life), internet dating and long distance relationships.

The publication of photographs and video material, as well as the use of webcams, played a central role in ICT-related problems. However, BRIS points out that for the most part pictures and films are considered as something positive and a resource.

Kid-oriented monthly newspaper to debut on Long Island

BY JAMES BERNSTEIN

September 1, 2008

A new newspaper will be distributed on Long Island this fall, but if you want a copy, you'll have to ask your son or daughter, provided they're young.

Like pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade young.

It's called Kidsville News, a free, national monthly paper to be published locally by a Cold Spring Harbor public-relations executive and distributed at schools in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, and at some restaurants and amusement parks, beginning this month.

In this age of the Internet, newspapers and young people may seem an unusual combination, but Kidsville News is aimed at stimulating youngsters to read about current events and educational topics, said Alyssa Nightingale, the publisher.
