NEWS / EVENTS: Countdown For 8th Nordic Talents
29.08.2008
In only seven days Copenhagen will host the 8th Nordic Talents (September 4-6) where some 200 film and TV professionals from the region will view 20 films from Nordic graduates, listen to 12 film pitches and catch up with what upcoming talents are up to. We take an inside look at the event.
Nordic Talents 2008
Organised by Nordisk Film & TV Fond in conjunction with the Danish Film School, the Nordic Talents has become a 'must attend' for Nordic professionals - film institute consultants, broadcasters, producers, film schools, former and future graduates - who can meet in a friendly atmosphere, keep track of who is doing what and discover new talents.
Svend Abrahamsen, founder of NT who now teaches film at the Danish Film School, says that the event has fulfilled his original wish. "I wanted to do something for Nordic graduate students ready to enter the Nordic film industry and thought that we should create a platform where people could get to know each other and talk about how they felt about film. This has totally succeeded," notes Abrahamsen. "Unlike at film festivals where professionals come to watch movies, here, those who come are interested in each other and interested in the people."

EVENTS: Media & Advocacy Camp for African Youths Kicks off
Media & Advocacy Camp for African Youths Kicks off
A five-day media and advocacy camp for African youths kicked off Friday (August 22) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Facilitated by Speak Africa, a multi-partner Pan African child and youth focused communication platform and strategy, currently with a secretariat based in UNICEF, Ethiopia, the camp will afford young people from across the continent the opportunity to share experiences, learn from each other, and contribute to the agenda of creating an Africa Fit for Children and Youth.
About twenty youth from seven countries are attending the camp which is also focused on giving young people the opportunity to get familiar with how to engage with decision-making processes on the continent, current development issues affecting African youth, and continental advocacy campaigns such as the Speak Africa "No Violence against Children and Youth" campaign.
Participants who are youths with media skills and interest in advocacy will explore development of advocacy and communication strategies, media advocacy for human rights, as well as basic journalism skills. Resources persons are from WITNESS (an international human rights organisation), Youth Media & Communication Initiative (an international organisation with focus on children and media), the African University College of Communication (based in Ghana), BBC World Service Trust, the African Child Policy Forum, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and UNICEF, Ethiopia.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Kerida McDonald, Chief Communication Cluster, UNICEF Ethiopia, noted that Speak Africa was not a UNICEF project but rather an agenda for African youth and the whole of Africa. She urged everyone to come on board. "Speak Africa is an evolving concept; it keeps growing and changing with the input of participants", Dr. McDonald added.
Reiterating the importance of 2008 as the Year of the African Youth and the need to put issues affecting African youth on the front burner of continental discourse, Dr. McDonald noted that youths in Africa won't have this kind of glorious opportunity to make their voices heard for another decade. She lamented the fact that almost a decade after the adoption of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) there were ten countries that had not ratified the charter and only four countries had ratified the African Youth Charter since its adoption in 2006.
Dr McDonald urged participants to be advocates for the ratification of both charters in their various countries before November 1, 2008, (Africa Youth Day) by petitioning their governments to show demonstration of their commitment to the 2008 Year of the African Youth and commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights.
The opening day saw three presentations. The first was a video on "No Violence Campaign" by the African Child Policy Forum. This was followed by a presentation on youth and advocacy by Chido Onumah, Coordinator of the Youth Media & Communication Initiative. The last presentation on using video as tool for advocacy was by Bukeni Waruzi, Program Coordinator, Africa and Middle East for WITNESS.
The Advocacy Camp is one of the activities on the Plan of Action for the African Union designated Year of the African Youth (YAY) 2008. The plan was developed at a consultative meeting held in January this year in collaboration with the African Union, UNICEF, UNECA and other UN partners, the African Child Policy Forum, Plan International, Save the Children and youth from across the continent.

EVENTS: Central Asia in a "barcamp" format
11.08.2008, By Yelena Jetpyspayeva, exclusively for Gazeta.kz
Central Asia in a 11 months to go, and such popular in the US format of un-conference as "barcamp," seized almost the whole territory of the former USSR, finally is getting to the Central Asia.
At the beginning of August Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) welcomed the first BarCamp Central Asia participants, and it's worthy of mentioning - the barcamp succeeded!
Almost 300 bloggers, web-delevopers, programmers and journalists from the Central Asia, CIS, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia gathered together on August 1-3 in the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, to discuss the current and new tendencies in the sphere of New Media on the first international un-conference - the BarCamp Central Asia 2008.
The official opening at the American University in Central Asia was joined by the representatives of the US Embassy to Kyrgyzstan, Opera Software and the Open Society Institute.
"I support the bloggers conference where everyone is proud to belong to the community," - says Marc Cameron, the US Ambassador adviser on education, culture and mass media. He thinks the every blogger's voice is here to improve our world gives everyone else a chance to understand we could do this. "As one says, blog is unedited voice of a human being. Blog gives a chance to those who has no chance to say something in a real life to be heard, and this improves the future", - Marc Cameron summed up.

PUBLICATIONS: Media by and for Youth and Children
Media by and for Youth and Children
Author
Gender and Media Diversity Centre
Publication Date
Summary
This section of the fourth edition of the Gender and Media Diversity Journal, published by the Gender and Media Diversity Centre, explores youth, children, and the media, including the participation of youth and children in creating programmes, learning media literacy, and bringing children's issues into the public eye for dialogue.
Celebrating Youth Media and Proposing a Way Forward by Mimi Brazeau
According to this article, Plan West Africa engages with children and communities to promote and protect children’s rights by creating radio programmes by and for young people. Since 1995, it has produced radio shows and extended the production and broadcast of youth radio programmes in 11 West African countries. In 1998, Burkina Faso was the first country to launch Plan's child rights radio campaign. Through the project, children acquire communication skills, technical/vocational skills, and problem solving skills. The author states that they gain self confidence through theatre workshops and participate in dialogues with their parents. As stated here, evaluations show increased empowerment and hope for change in the participants. New technologies are increasing their desire to be part of the social dialogue.
Child and Youth Participation in Health Media by Daniel Walter
From the abstract: "Involving children in media to raise awareness about health-related issues is not only essential to creating good programmes, but also to empowering young people to be active members of the community. Examples of programming by and for young people show that children and youth bring unique perspectives to media programmes, and that once empowered, can successfully create programming that can impact positively on themselves, families, and communities." The article points to participatory radio as a forum in which young people can create programming relevant to their own issues. It poses the question: "What is participatory?", and responds with: "The most visible and successful youth participation programs are usually those that incorporate the ideals of 'genuine and effective' participation, i.e., an environment in which young people are involved in every step of the process from planning to evaluation. Challenges to 'genuine and effective' participation include: getting adults to let go; creating an environment at home or school where participation is serious and encouraged; overcoming cultural norms that children should be seen and not heard; and generating enough funds to sustain projects." The examples of theory into practice include several projects of Community Media for Development (CMFD) Productions: a series of programmes produced by youth teams at the World Summit on Media for Children; Portuguese language radio public service announcements on human trafficking produced in a participatory process with youth; and a participatory seminar to create a series of magazine style radio broadcasts at the National Children's Radio Seminar 2004.
Media Literacy for Learners by Sikhonzile Ndlovu
In June 2007 Gender Links (GL) launched its first Gender and Media Literacy course for young people, with the goal of equipping young people with skills to look critically at the media, as well as use it to their advantage. According to the author, young people observed gender bias in the media, became internet literate, and gradually shifted from being consumers of media to creators of media.
In Practice: Together We’ll be Ok -Children in Distress
Founded in July 1996 and based in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, the Children in Distress Network (CINDI) brings together over 100 member organisations who collaborate in the interests of children affected or orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Its goal is to provide them with a continuum of HIV/AIDS care and support. Members work together in clusters for close collaboration among those with expertise in a particular area. The clusters are: a) Community Development Cluster (CD); b) Home-Based Care Cluster (HBC); c) Psychosocial Support/Schools and Youth Development Cluster (PSS); and d) Children-in-Care Cluster (CIC). As an example of collaboration, various members of one cluster pooled their knowledge and compiled a booklet (in English and isiZulu) and created a poster in response to concerns about sexual abuse of children.

PROJECTS: New machinima produced by teens in Global Kids (USA)
school program, 20+ high school students used machinima to create
short films and public service announcements that relate to important
global issues.
"Race To Equality" is a short video that displays the students'
impressive understanding of both digital media and important
international issues. Through Race To Equality, the 15 young creators
illustrate a poignant story about the struggle of three individuals in
Tibet, Brazil and the U.S. to overcome institutional racism in their
respective countries. While the stories are fictional, they are based
on research with the U.N. about unequal access to education and
financial aid in China, Brazil and the U.S. In the film, the
characters document their experiences at the U.N. Headquarters,
underlying the film's central message about the necessity to take
social action to overcome such obstacles.
The new film, Race to Equality, which premiered on Thursday, June 26th
at the Sony Wonder Technology Lab in Manhattan, welcomed over 60
attendees, including teachers, friends and families of the young
filmmakers, with opening remarks by Global Kids' Executive Director
Carole Artigiani.
Race To Equality is the culmination of the year-long Virtual Video
Project, an after-school program conducted by Global Kids, Inc. The
students gathered regularly during the past year to learn about film
production, global access to education, and virtual worlds. Their
knowledge and efforts resulted in the production of Race To Equality,
a year-end project on the struggle of individuals from Brazil, Tibet,
and the United States to overcome racism in higher education.
The students represent a range of high schools from Brooklyn and
Queens, including, Aviation High School, James Baldwin School, the
Academy of American Studies, Banneker Academy, and Hostos Academy.
The Virtual Video Project is part of Global Kids' Online Leadership
Program (OLP) and made possible with funding from the John D. and
Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the New York City Department of
Youth and Community Development. The project was also supported by the
Campaign for Educational Equity at Columbia University.

ARTICLES: 'Listen to Children Before Clamping Down on Internet' Commissioner Urges MPs to Talk to Young (NORTHERN IRELAND)
Northern Ireland's Children's Commissioner today appealed to MPs to "listen" to the views of young people before they plough ahead with any sweeping changes to age classification and access to social networking or video-sharing sites.
Patricia Lewsley was speaking after members from the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee announced yesterday that they believed websites such as You Tube, which broadcast films and other content, should carry age certificates and those with pornographic or violent content should be subjected to a television- style 'watershed'.
"The internet is a potential force for good, for most young people," the commissioner said. "However there is content which is inappropriate for young people.
"Before taking any action, I would encourage decision makers to speak directly to children and young people themselves and to listen to their views.

100,000 kids join CBBC social network
The BBC has said its social networking site for young children, MyCBBC, has reached 100,000 registered users in four months, as the corporation addresses demand for safe social media tools for younger children.
MyCBBC was launched shortly before an official report by media regulator Ofcom found that more than a quarter of eight- to 11-year-olds in the UK regularly use social networking sites designed for older children and teenagers.
Bebo, Facebook, MySpace and most other major networks require users to be at least 13. A smaller number of sites offer services for younger children, because of tighter safety demands.
MyCBBC, which was developed with production company TwoFour Digital, is designed for six- to 12-year-olds, and invites them to design their own "dens" with furniture and accessories. It also offers material related to BBC children's programmes to customise the page.
