Moscow : The publishers of Russia's oldest humour magazine for children
have announced a contest for the best drawing about India.

"The contest is being held as part of the Year of Russia in India and is
devoted to Russia's participation as a guest of honour at the 18th New
Delhi World Book Fair," the head of the Vesyolye Kartinki Publishing
House, Irina Deshkova, told RIA Novosti in an interview.

Vesyolye Kartinki is organising the event in association with Russia's
Federal Agency for Print and Mass Media as well as the International
Projects Centre Ima Dialogue.

School children from all across Russia will take part in the
competition, Deshkova said. Drawings about Indian history and culture
can be submitted until Jan 15. Winners will receive souvenirs and will
be guests of honour at the Indian Embassy in Moscow. Members of the
embassy staff will sit on the jury panel.

The most interesting entries will be displayed at New Delhi book fair
from Feb 2-10.

A similar contest will be held next year in India, where children will
be invited to draw images of Russia.

DIGITAL DIARIES: Nigerian street children tell their stories of life without security

Digital Diary: Nigerian street children tell their stories of life
without security

***By Christine Jaulmes*

NEW YORK, USA, 26 December 2007 -- Isaiah has spent 5 of his 15 years
living on the streets of Lagos, Nigeria, the second largest city of
Africa. Like hundreds of other children, he spends his days and nights
in this sprawling metropolis trying to fend for himself.

"It is not easy living on the street but what can I do?" asks Isaiah,
one of 25 children who have told their stories on Nigerian national
radio through a UNICEF-supported project.

"I have two sisters that I have not seen in five years, I have smoked
Indian hemp like other boys of my age, got beaten by bigger boys, robbed
of my money, took my bath in the canal and slept under the bridge,"
Isaiah says in one broadcast. "The good thing is that I am alive!"

Given the opportunity to go to school, Isaiah says he would like to
become a lawyer. "I want to be defending people," he explains.

Hughes delivers bumper Christmas for disadvantaged young people

PRNewswire-GNN London 26 December

London, 26 December /PRNewswire-GNN/ --

DEPARTMENT FOR CHILDREN, SCHOOLS AND FAMILIES News Release (2007/0244)
issued by The Government News Network on 26 December 2007

PLEASE NOTE EMBARGO
Not for publication or broadcast before
0001 hours Wednesday 26 Dec 2007

Young People's Minister Beverley Hughes today presented disadvantaged young
people with an extra special Christmas present as she announced £9 million
for creative youth-led projects including film making, designing computer
games, and online and print news.

The money will be available over the next three years and will help young
people get hands-on experience in one of the country's growing industries. The
Department for Children, Schools and Families are already discussing with
Mediabox how the first £2 million of this funding can build on the innovative
work they do in inspiring young people to take part in creative youth-led
projects.

Beverley Hughes said:

"Often when I meet young people they tell me about a lack of things to do
and places to go. That is why our Youth Strategy is all about creating
opportunities that empower young people to make decisions and engage in
their communities.

"We have committed £679million for positive activities for young people
and projects like Mediabox offer a fantastic opportunity for young people
to get some hands-on experience in one of our growing industries, to talk
about their lives and hopes and to showcase what they are capable of."

The Heathrow Express/SideTrack videowall is, at 450 metres, the world’s largest LED screen.

The videowall is Europe’s first ever LED tunnel wall lighting system and will enable UNICEF to highlight its Change for Good campaign between Thursday 27 December 2007 and Sunday 6 January 2008. The joint UNICEF/British Airways campaign, which encourages air travellers to donate any currency during BA flights, has already raised more than £24 million (US $48 million).

EVENTS: Barcamp 2008 in Riga

Barcamp 2008 in Riga

Barcamp is a unique international unconference on new media, blogs,
podcasts, social networking, citizen journalism, web 2.0, open source
and everything else that is connected with it. Unconference includes
open presentations, workshops and workgroups; everything is held by the
participants themselves.

Barcamp Baltics will take place in Riga, Latvia, from the 8th till the
10th of February 2008. 200 to 300 specialists from various fields of
information technology are expected to gather during the event; they
will mostly represent the Baltic and CIS states. Participants will
include active content managers and Internet users, as well as owners of
the websites with a stable popularity and audience.

The main goal of the event is to stimulate the development of new media
projects in the Baltic states. Barcamp is an effective way to share the
experience and to create a common vision on the new media development.

This will be the first time when the event of such a scale will take
place in the Baltic region. It is planned that Barcamp will become
annual and will give its participants an opportunity to present their
own ideas and projects to other professionals from this region.

The unconference will be held in the Barcamp format that was established
in 2005 when the first event of such a kind took place in the Silicon
Valley. Shortly after that, this format gained the popularity among the
IT specialists in North America and Western Europe. Barcamp is called
unconference to highlight its informal and unofficial atmosphere that is
kept up during the open discussions.

The rules of Barcamp promote the idea of participants' involvement in
the organization and logistics process. Everyone can attend the
unconference but if you want to be a participant you should make your
input: present a project, hold a discussion, announce the changes in
your blog, shoot and distribute the video from the unconference, help in
organizing.

Around 4--5 sessions will be held simultaneously during the event
(including presentations, workgroups, speeches, reports, discussions).
There will be around 80 presentations during two days, both in English
and Russian language.

The most part of the presentations will be stored in the web in the
video format. That will be possible because of the wireless network
connection in the venue.

The uniqueness of the unconference is that it is a birthplace of new
projects. This event is designed for presenting your ideas and projects
to your potential grant givers and sponsors. Commercial and social
grants are supposed to be given to the brand new projects or for the
development of the existing ones.
The experience of the Baltic new media proves that many creative and
unique ideas start their way having a low budget. We want to give an
opportunity to the unconference participants; most of them have already
had an experience in creating the web projects. It would be interesting
to keep an eye on the realization of these ideas during the time frames
announced by the participants on the last day of Barcamp.

NEWS / GRANTS: Angry young to air views on murder (UK)

Angry young to air views on murder

By Tom Lloyd - Children & Young People Now
17 December 2007

A group of young people from London are to make a film expressing their
anger at being ignored after one of their peers was murdered.

Billy Cox, 15, was shot at home on the Fenwick Estate in Clapham in
February this year. Many of the other young people from the estate felt
the no one listened to them after the killing.

Now they are getting a chance to tell their stories, through a project
run by Big Up Films, with £13,500 from the government's £6m Mediabox fund.

The scheme is one of 25 being supported in the fifth round of Mediabox,
which totals £383,000. The two largest grants from the round, both
around £75,000, have gone to UnLtd, and YCTV Foundation.

EVENTS: The fifth 'Showcomotion' Children's Media Conference will run from Wednesday 2 to Friday 4 July 2008

Children's Media Conference For July

The fifth 'Showcomotion' Children’s Media Conference will run from Wednesday 2 to Friday 4 July 2008.

The conference in July will undoubtedly focus on the challenging environment that faces kids’ media, including the Ofcom report, the Tania Byron report and re-organisation at BBC Children’s.

In this fast-moving environment, producers and creatives need to keep abreast of upcoming trends. As ever, Showcomotion will be leading on this and will be focusing heavily on the new business and creative opportunities available to the kids’ entertainment sector as a whole.

ARTICLES / WEBSITES / GENDER IN MEDIA: Geena Davis Institute to Hold Children Gender in Film and Television Conference

Geena Davis Institute to Hold Children Gender in Film and Television
Conference

Three years ago, while watching children's television programs and
videos with her then 2-year old daughter, Academy Award winner Geena
Davis began to notice what she thought to be a remarkable imbalance in
the ratio of male to female characters. From that small starting point,
Davis went on to sponsor the largest research project ever undertaken on
gender in children's entertainment* (resulting in 4 discreet studies,
including one on children's television).

The research showed that in the top-grossing G-rated films from
1990-2005, there were three male characters for every one female -- a
statistic that did not improve over time. The concern was clear: what
message does this send to young children?

That research sparked the launch of The Geena Davis Institute on Gender
in Media (GDIGM). The Institute's first focus is an on-the ground
program that works collaboratively with the entertainment industry to
dramatically increase the presence of female characters in media aimed
at children and to reduce stereotyping of both males and females.

NEWS / TV: JimJam launches across central Europe

JimJam launches across central Europe

by Gary Rusak <mailto:editorial@brunico.com>

On the heels of landing carriage in Eastern Europe earlier this month,
new 24-hour preschool television channel JimJam is getting ready to
launch its first feed across Central Europe and add another 1.4 million
subscribers to its viewer ranks.

The move ups the channel's existing reach on Sky Italia children's
package, and JimJam is set to hit more than six million households by
early 2008. Also, English, Polish, Hungarian and Czech versions are
available, and a Romanian channel is due to launch in January 2008.

Owners Chellomedia and Hit Entertainment will continue to work on
landing more carriage deals throughout 2008. The current channel lineup,
not surprisingly, runs heavy on content culled from HIT's series
library, including /Thomas & Friends/, /Bob the Builder/, /Fireman Sam/
and /Kipper/.

NEW YORK, 11 December 2007 – UNICEF and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences have presented the 2007 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting Award to National Broadcasting of Thailand (NBT).  The 2007 ICDB Award for Radio Excellence was presented to ONUCI FM (Cote d’Ivoire) and Radio Mozambique.

The awards were given to the broadcaster whose programming best reflects the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting theme in 2007: Unite for Children. Unite Against AIDS.

“We are very impressed with all the nominees for tackling the sensitive subject of HIV and AIDS with such dignity and creativity,” said Karen Cirillo, UNICEF’s Executive Producer for Children’s Broadcasting Initiatives. “NBT’s program best embodied the spirit of the ICDB by providing a great opportunity and responsibility to the Thai Youth News reporters to create and present stories not only on the ICDB itself but throughout the year,” she added.

NBT’s entry, “From South to North, From East to West, Thailand ICDB-Unite for Children, Unite against Aids,” was written and produced by young people in Thailand. It includes stories about friends who take risks that can lead to HIV and AIDS infections.

After each story, the youth producers were interviewed about their experiences by other young presenters. Youth reporters also interviewed high level Thai cabinet and ministry members.

ONUCI FM and Radio Mozambique shared the first ICDB Award for Radio Excellence. ONUCI radio aired a special radio programme for ICDB, which included a round table discussion, interviews with HIV + young people and on-the-street interviews.  The radio programme was aired by ONUCI Radio throughout Cote d’Ivoire, IRIN radio facilitated the street interviews, and UNICEF coordinated the event by providing technical and logistical support.

Radio Mozambique’s entry called, “Child to Child Radio Program” was a live show that consisted of interviews, games and quizzes.  A team of youth reporters presented special programs on the impact of HIV and AIDS on youth. A special CD of music composed and produced by children and young people on the subject of HIV and AIDS was also launched.

The ICDB award for television broadcasters was presented to Thai Youth News Founder Weera Suwannachot on behalf of NBT at the Academy’s 35th International Emmy® Awards Gala on November 19, 2007 at the Hilton New York Hotel.

About ICDB:
The ICDB was launched in 1991 to encourage broadcasters worldwide to create awareness for children’s issues. Each December, these youth write, report, produce and present programs that allow them to express their thoughts on the issues that affect them. In 1994, the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and UNICEF established the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting Award to honor the broadcaster who best embraces the spirit of the ICDB.

About International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences:
Founded in 1969, the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is the largest organization of global broadcasters, with over 500 members from nearly 70 countries and over 400 companies. The Academy was chartered with a mission to recognize excellence in television programming produced outside of the United States, and it presents the International Emmy® Award to programs in fourteen categories.  The International Emmy® Awards Gala, to be held November 20, in New York City attracts over 1,100 international figures in broadcast, entertainment and media.

About UNICEF
UNICEF is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence.  The world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS.  UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.

Leading companies in the European food and beverage industry said
Tuesday that they would voluntarily change their policies on advertising
for children by the end of next year, setting standards on nutritional
content to encourage more healthful lifestyles.

The move followed recent calls by the European Union for the food
industry to use commercial communications to support parents in making
the right diet and lifestyle choices for their children, the 11
companies said in a joint statement.

They agreed not to advertise food and beverages on television programs,
Web sites or in print media where children under age 12 could be
considered a target audience, except for products that met specific
nutrition criteria.

They also agreed not to engage in any commercial communications related
to food and beverages in primary schools, except where specifically
requested by or agreed to with the school administration for educational
purposes, the statement said.

ICDB: Gambia - The Ideal World for Children

Gambia: The Ideal World for Children

The Daily Observer <http://www.observer.gm/enews/> (Banjul)

EDITORIAL
11 December 2007
Posted to the web 11 December 2007

Television and radio play a vital role in raising awareness of global
issues. They also play a tremendous and very critical role in shaping
the worldview of people. A global media campaign such as UNICEF's
International Children's Day of Broadcasting highlights the efforts of
media practitioners worldwide in promoting children's right and
encouraging their full participation in the process of shaping their own
lives.

After months of marathon preparation, the day was finally celebrated
last sunday, 9th December 2007. Accordingly, this day is set aside to
give children the opportunity to showcase their potentials. This year's
theme: "The world we want", is, in effect, committing the leaders to
make an informed choice for the next generation of world leaders.

Indeed, the performance of our youngsters last Sunday was quite
mesmerising. Some of them did so well that one is tempted to think that
they had been on the trade since the inception of Television. In
speaking their minds, these children gave broadcasters and decision
makers the opportunity to see what they had to say about their lives.

PRESS RELEASE: I would like to go to school and become a pilot' - Children in Somalia Speak Out for Peace

I would like to go to school and become a pilot’

Children in Somalia Speak Out for Peace

Nairobi: Tuesday, 11 December 2007 -- At the launch of the 2008 Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP) for Somalia, a video highlighting the voices of children, particularly that of a young girl who wants to be a pilot, reminded those present about the impact of conflict on children.

I would like to go to school and become a pilot,” said Fartoun Ibrahim, aged 14 “I am asking the world to help us. I want my missing brother back. I want to leave this place with my family and live elsewhere.”

Somalia has seen a drastic deterioration in the humanitarian situation since the start of 2007 with over 1.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance.

The Consolidated Appeals Process is a mechanism for the humanitarian community to outline their plans for action in 2008.

Children like Fartoun live in one of the most vulnerable protection environments in the world,” said UNICEF’s Representative to Somalia, Christian Balslev-Olesen. “Women and children in the centre and south of the country are the worst-affected, with thousands of families displaced, livelihoods disrupted, and an estimated 83,000 children suffering from severe malnutrition,” he added.

Less than a fourth of Somalia’s population can access basic health services and only 29% use a safe water source. Preventable or easily treated diseases remain the main killers of children and women.

The 2008 CAP aims to address the most urgent needs of the 1.5 million people affected. As one of the leading agencies providing emergency assistance to the children and women of Somalia, UNICEF has appealed for US$ 47 million for 2008. This amount will enable UNICEF and its partners to provide critical life saving interventions to 350,000 children under the age of five; vaccinate 1.4 million children against polio; and treat up to 90,000 malnourished children.

UNICEF will also provide 1.2 million displaced or vulnerable persons with access to safe water and sanitation; enable 120,000 children to resume their schooling and equip 20,000 girls and women with knowledge and skills to prevent HIV, while also mobilising communities to reunite families, end the recruitment of child soldiers and prevent injuries from mines and unexploded ordinance.

In 2007, with generous funding against the 2007 CAP, UNICEF and its partners were able to ensure, amongst other results, that half a million people had access to basic health care; 1.6 million children were immunized against polio and 883,000 against measles; some 200,000 people had access to safe drinking water, nearly 60,000 displaced children were able to resume their schooling, over 240,000 displaced and vulnerable households received essential shelter and survival items, and 28,000 young girls and women learned skills to protect themselves and others from HIV, sexual violence and abuse.

NEWS / RESEARCH: Cell phones a must-have for kids (CHINA)

Cell phones a must-have for kids
By Yan Zhen 2007-12-10

CELL phones have become a must in nearly half of city pupils' school
bags, while children's poor judgment of information brought by modern
technology worries parents and educators, a latest survey shows.

The survey by researchers at Shanghai University's school of film and TV
asked 534 primary school students, 139 teachers and 173 parents about
their attitudes to media and its impact on children.

Researchers posed the question: What essential item would a pupil return
to pick up at home after he had left for school?

Nearly 47 percent said a mobile phone, almost three times the number who
chose cartoon books, the second highest choice.

Students choosing textbooks, however, accounted for only 7.5 percent
among the children. The top choices were a cell phone, cartoon books,
game machines and MP3 music players.

NEWS: Children's Ombudsman on minors' rights

Children's Ombudsman on minors' rights

The Children's Ombudsman will present in a press conference on
Monday the interventions and conclusions reached by the agency on the
implementation of children's rights in Greece.

The presentation will be made on the occasion of International
Children's Day of Broadcasting on December 12, the day television and
radio stations around the world dedicate some or all of their
programming to kids.

In an interview given to the ANA-MPA, Children's Ombudsman George
Moschos referred to the body's conclusions, stressing that the main
problem for children's institutions in Greece is the poor level of
welfare services provided by the state. The situation is equally
problematic regardless of whether it concerns children with
disabilities, neglected children, or children whose parents are in the
process of a divorce and fight for custody rights, he stated.

Infrastructures are inadequate and not specialized and there are no
psychologists or social workers in schools in spite of repeated calls
made by children requesting such a service, he stressed.

Only a small percentage of juvenile delinquents are so dangerous as
to need incarceration and therefore the majority of the children need
shelter facilities staffed by small specialized personnel units made up
of 7-10 persons resembling the family model. Furthermore, foster
parenting is essentially non-existent even though it is legally
guaranteed, he said.

NEWS / ICDB: ICDB 2007 asks youths to speak out on the air about ‘The World We Want’

ICDB 2007 asks youths to speak out on the air about 'The World We Want'

*By Karen Cirillo *

NEW YORK, USA, 7 December 2007 – This Sunday, 9 December, broadcasters
around the world will join together to celebrate the International
Children's Day of Broadcasting (ICDB), an annual event launched by
UNICEF in 1991 as a way to increase the profile of children's issues in
the broadcast media. This year's theme is 'The World We Want'.

ICDB invites youths onto the television and radio airwaves to produce
and present their own programmes. In 2007, young people are being asked
to think about the world they live in – whether it is the world they
want and, if not, what can be done to change it.

"The thing I would love for the whole world is to make sure everyone is
living peacefully and has somewhere to stay," said one youth interviewed
in Zambia. Others wished for an end to HIV or for the opportunity to
finish their education. Their thoughts are featured in a short film made
by UNICEF Zambia for this year's ICDB.

Global youth speak-out

Young people in over 80 countries have been preparing for the
festivities on Sunday, when they will present their thoughts and
aspirations for the future.

National Radio of Angola, for example, has put together a special
programme containing children's stories, theatrical performances and
songs. During a special debate segment, children will share their
thoughts on their own future. In response, adults who work to protect
children's rights will talk about what they're doing to help youths today.

NEWS: EU launches campaign for intercultural dialogue

EU launches campaign for intercultural dialogue

04.12.2007 - 18:54 CET | By Teresa Küchler
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - To foster better understanding and communication
between the diverse crowd that makes up European citizens, Brussels has
launched a media campaign about its forthcoming "Year of intercultural
Dialogue."

The initiative has a budget of €10 million, plus money from EU capitals,
and will be celebrated throughout the whole of 2008.

It includes seven flagship multi-European projects and 27 national
projects involving culture, education, youth, sport and citizenship.

It will seek to "explore the benefits of cultural diversity" and "foster
a sense of European belonging", according to the programme.

EU enlargement, together with greater mobility within the union, new and
old migratory flows and increased trade with the rest of the world have
led to more contact between cultures, religions and beliefs, ethnic
groups and languages in Europe, says the commission

Flanking the EU's culture commissioner, Jan Figel, at the official
launch on Tuesday were seven elected "goodwill ambassadors" for the year.

They included well-known personalities in the field of culture, such as
Brazilian best seller writer Paulo Coelho, Slovak music director Jack
Martin Händler and Serbian eurovision Song Contest winner Marija Serifovic.

According to Mr Coelho, the author of the best-selling novel /The
Alchemist/, "in these difficult moments in which the world is in danger,
culture is the base to establish a dialogue".

He pointed out that the lowest common denominator of all communities in
the world, no matter how isolated, are cultural: music, beauty, or a
notion of God.

Six Brussels debates on culture will be organised during 2008, with each
debate taking a specific sectoral view on intercultural dialogue, such
as media, arts and heritage, the workplace, inter-religious dialogue,
education and youth, migration and integration are on the agenda for the
year.

On the launch day, the European commission also presented a recent
survey showing that three in four EU citizens welcome dialogue with
other cultures.

According to the survey, almost three quarters of EU citizens believe
that people with a different background, be it ethnic, religious or
national, enrich the cultural life of their country.
