International Children’s Day of Broadcasting

UNICEF Announces International Children's Day of Broadcasting Award Nominees

NEW YORK, 21 September 2007 – UNICEF today announced the nominees for
the International Children's Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) Award,
co-presented yearly by UNICEF and The International Academy of
Television Arts & Sciences. The seven nominees for the 2007 ICDB Award
won their respective regional competitions.

The winner of the 2007 ICDB Award will be announced at the Academy's
35th International Emmy® Awards Gala on November 19, 2007 at the Hilton
New York Hotel.

The nominees, and regional winners, are from Bangladesh, Brazil,
Gambia, Germany, Kenya, Syria and Thailand and represent the best work
produced for the 2006 ICDB. Read more about ICDB at www.unicef.org/icdb

"Each year we are inspired and encouraged by the UNICEF family of
broadcasters' dedication to children's programming and the ICDB," said
Stephen Cassidy, Chief of UNICEF's Internet, Broadcast and Image
Section. "Over and over we are impressed and humbled by the quality
and creativity these broadcasters exhibit in advancing UNICEF's mission
to involve youth in the media-making process. Children everywhere are
better served because of their work."

Judging for the regional prizes took place between May and August and
focused on the 2006 ICDB theme: "Unite for Children. Unite Against
AIDS." The entries were evaluated by teams of regional broadcasters and
television experts. The judges looked at content, execution and
year-round youth participation.

The ICDB Regional Prizes went to ATN Bangla (Hope for Life); TV Cultura
(Big Doctor);
Gambia Television and Radio Services (ICDB 2007: Unite for Children.
Unite Against AIDS);
ZDF (Stark! Khombisile – dance and fly of joy), Syrian Broadcast TV
(Let's Play). and NBT Thailand (From South to North, From East to West,
Thailand ICDB-Unite for Children, Unite Against Aids).

The regional winners will also be honored at a special ceremony at
UNICEF House in New York City.

The ICDB was launched in 1991 to encourage broadcasters worldwide to
create awareness for children's issues. Each December, these youth
write, report, produce and present programs that allow them to express
their thoughts on the issues that affect them. In 1994, The
International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and UNICEF
established the International Children's Day of Broadcasting Award to
honor the broadcaster who best embraces the spirit of the ICDB.

The International Children's Day of Broadcasting is celebrated by
hundreds of broadcasters around the world. The next ICDB will take
place on 9 December 2007 with the theme of
"The World We Want."

Founded in 1969, The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences
is the largest organization of global broadcasters, with over 500
members from nearly 70 countries and over 400 companies. The Academy was
chartered with a mission to recognize excellence in television
programming produced outside of the United States, and it presents the
International Emmy® Award in fourteen categories. The International
Emmy® Awards Gala, to be held November 20, in New York City attracts
over 1,100 international figures in broadcast, entertainment and media.

Internews Network to Build Community Radio Station, Opens Office in Amman

(October 1, 2007) Internews Network is launching a new radio station in
Jordan that will focus on women and youth. The station, to be operated
in cooperation with the Princess Basma Youth Center, will broadcast to
all of Jordan.

To support this project and its other media development activities in
Jordan, Internews opened an office in Amman this month.

"Internews Network is pleased to support Jordan's efforts in media and
civil society development," said Nadia Al Alami, Internews Network's
Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa. "We are very
excited that the new station will provide opportunities for Jordanian
youth to use media as a tool for access to information and community
development."

Through a grant from the US Department of State's Bureau of Democracy,
Human Rights and Labor (DRL), Internews will train and support young
people to operate a radio station to be built at the Princess Basma
Youth Center in Amman. The young journalists will learn the technical
and journalistic skills needed to operate a community radio station,
producing radio programming with a particular emphasis on issues of
concern to youth and women.

This project builds on Internews' project establishing Autostrad, a
youth radio production unit, at Princess Basma Youth Center last summer.
Young trainees have gained real-life experience producing programming at
the Autostrad studio, and their programs have aired on Jordanian radio
stations.

Last year Internews also launched Yarmouk FM, Jordan's first
community-based radio station, in partnership with Western Kentucky
University. YFM, based at Yarmouk University in Irbid, enables students
to gain hands-on experience running a real radio station. YFM now
broadcasts 24 hours a day to one million listeners throughout northern
Jordan and the surrounding region. The Autostrad and YFM projects are
also funded under the grant to Internews from DRL.

Zena Nasereddin, the former International Programs Officer for the
Office of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, will head up Internews'
new Amman office as Country Representative. Prior to her position at Her
Majesty's office, Nasereddin worked at the Public Affairs Section of the
American Embassy in Jordan.

Internews Network is an international NGO based in California that works
to improve access to information for people around the world by
fostering independent media and promoting open communications policies
in the public interest. Founded in 1982, Internews has worked in 70
countries and trains some 10,000 media professionals each year.

In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Internews also currently has
media development projects in Egypt and the West Bank and Gaza. For more
information on Internews' work in the MENA region, see the Internews
MENA web site (in Arabic).

ARTICLES: Where Mentors Guide Young Filmmakers (USA)

Where Mentors Guide Young Filmmakers

JAMES DUARTE, 16, says his plan to become a film director and
screenwriter can be traced to when he was 9 years old and persuaded his
father to buy him a camcorder.

These days, Mr. Duarte is conceiving, shooting and editing short films
in a two-year after-school and weekend program run by the Downtown
Community Television Center, a 35-year-old nonprofit production and
training organization in Manhattan. The center's professional filmmakers
produce television documentaries (15 of which have won Emmy Awards), and
its trainees include high school students, some of whom are bent on
pursuing film-related careers.

"I definitely want to be in the film industry," said Megan Rosado, a
17-year-old trainee. "It's kind of a dream of mine to have my own film
company."

Ms. Rosado, a Bronx resident, and Mr. Duarte, also of the Bronx, spoke
about their plans recently while editing film they had shot for separate
projects.

Each year, 8 to 12 high school freshmen and sophomores are admitted to
the program, which began in the mid-1990s and is called Media
Fellowship. They receive stipends of $7 an hour for nine hours a week,
though the program's administrators say that most devote more time to
the program.

RESEARCH: TV is good for children, insists academic (UK)

TV is good for children, insists academic

FIONA MACLEOD EDUCATION CORRESPONDENT (fmacleod@scotsman.com)

TELEVISION can be beneficial to children, helping them develop important
social skills and inspiring creative play, a leading Scottish
educationalist said yesterday.

Dr Ross Deuchar says watching television in a structured way can both
stimulate and educate young viewers.

Previous studies have suggested too much television can lead to a wide
number of problems, ranging from reduced attention-span to autism. Some
experts have suggested very young children should be shown no television
at all.

But Dr Deuchar, a senior lecturer in Strathclyde University's education
faculty, said: "Parents who are careful to select programmes that
stimulate their children's imagination, who watch the programmes with
them and talk about the content, are doing their young ones a huge
educational favour.

MEDIA LAW: Swiss youth organisation combats media violence

Swiss youth organisation combats media violence

The Swiss Pro Juventute foundation has launched a petition demanding
better protection of children and youngsters from violence in the media.

The youth organisation is calling for the creation of an independent
body to set nationwide age limits on content provided by the
entertainment industry, such as DVDs or computer games.

At a news conference in Bern on Thursday Pro Juventute pointed out that
children and teenagers have almost unlimited and uncontrolled access to
violent images via television, their computers or mobile phones.

EVENTS: The Power of Youth (UK / EGYPT)

The Power of Youth?

Two Headliners members attended an international youth peace forum in
Egypt to speak about the relationship between young people and the
media. Here Nina writes about her experience.

Nina EgyptThe Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Peace Movement held
a youth forum on the 'Power of Youth for Peace' in Sharm El Sheikh,
Egypt, from September 1-3 2007 Myself and Tara Brown were invited by the
First Lady of Egypt (Suzanne Mubarak), to discuss young people's
relationship to the media.

Our main role was to discuss how Headliners is different to mainstream
journalism organisations in the way in which they engage young people in
the media.

We had arrived for the conference a day early, which left us to find
ways to indulge ourselves in the luxury hotel and scenic beach in Sharm
el Sheikh. After the continuous tedious security checks, due to the
presence of the First Lady, I was looking forward to the start of the
conference the next day, and to meeting new people with different
experiences and seeing how they felt about the event. But in the
meantime I was soaking up the atmosphere and chilling in the heat…
