WEBSITES / NEWS: Children's virtual world planned by the BBC

Children's virtual world planned by the BBC

The BBC has announced plans by CBBC, the channel for 7-12 year olds, to create CBBC World - a website which would allow digitally literate children to access BBC characters and resources. Users would be able to build an online presence, known as an avatar, then create and share content.

The BBC reports that CBBC World would not have the "financial aspects" of other online worlds such as Second Life. Those building CBBC World said the emphasis would be on safety and responsibility, with no chatrooms or facilities for building new parts of the virtual world. It is expected to go live in the summer with a full launch in the autumn.

OPPORTUNITIES / GRANTS: Calling all youth filmmakers!

Subject: Calling all youth filmmakers!

Have you been thinking about the environment in which you live?  If so, we'd like to consider hiring you to make a film.

Listen Up! and Adobe Youth Voices announces Beyond Green, an international film project that will ask youth filmmakers worldwide, ages 13-19, to produce short personal stories that answer two important questions:

How do you and people in your community interact with the environment? Is there a better way?

We'll help you make a great film.  In fact, we are prepared to provide selected organizations a $10,000 production award and lots of support.

Listen Up! wants filmmakers and people concerned with their environment to think beyond green and grasp original ideas that reflect the physical and cultural environments that they live in. We encourage youth to investigate environment considerations for themselves, to add their voices to mainstream media.

Visit http://listenup.org/beyondgreen for all of the details.

Applications go online May 31st, but you can sign up for an application reminder now.

NEWS: Local girl to speak at United Nations Youth Assembly

Local girl to speak at United Nations Youth Assembly

Joe McWilliams
Lakeside Leader

Jamie Linington is turning some heads. The 17-year-old is poised to address the United Nations Youth Assembly this August regarding a film she directed and starred in called 'Wisdom of the Elders.' Such a fantastic opportunity would have seemed surreal to Linington just last year when she was living day-to-day like any other teenager.

Starting at the beginning of her incredible journey, Linington says Lucille Cook helped get the ball rolling on what could be the beginning of a great career in filmmaking.

I worked at the Friendship Centre for three years as a summer employee, Linington says. All those years, she (Cook) was telling me to get involved. I started with the Alberta Aboriginal Youth Council in November as part of the UMAYC (Urban Multipurpose Aboriginal Youth Centre) proposal committee.

I agreed but I didn't entirely know what I was getting myself into. I am a younger person but was always interested in leadership roles and public speaking. She said the UMAYC proposal committee would be a good learning experience.

Pre-Summit Training is Completed

On May 13, 2007, the Russian Junior 8 Summit delegation finished its
pre-summit training program, which was organized by St. Petersburg State
University.

The Russian delegation members formed opinions, backed up by facts,
concerning all the topics that are planned for discussion at the summit,
learned how to appropriately carry on a discussion of these subjects and
other timely topics, in English. On the last day of their summit
preparation, the group developed their basic tenets which underlie the team's
basic position.

Not of lesser importance were the team building skills that the group
learned from psychologists employed at SpbSU and the Non-Governmental
Educational Institution "Architecture of the Future." The teens now can cope
with stress, support each other, and make effective use of information that
they are given.

The members of the Russian delegation acquired these skills during their
pre-summit training which took place 10-12 hours per day for a total of 7
days. The preparation of these youngsters included intensive lessons,
interesting sessions with speakers, and a full schedule of leisure
activities. When the teens weren't studying they watched a festive parade,
and a fireworks display, saw the opening of the bridges in St. Petersburg,
visited a sea-aquarium, and toured SpbSU, as well as the Higher Education
School of Russian Folk Art. A host of different professionals met with the
delegation. This list includes: L. A. Verbiskaya, the Rector of SpbSU; V. V.
Markovchin, advisor to the Deputy Minister of Education in Russia; M. I.
Krotov, the General Secretary of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS
countries; I. V. Dubinnikov, Administrative Director of Power Machines; E.
Stanislavov, UNICEF advisor to Eastern Europe, the Baltics, and the CIS
countries; and T. Ushakova, participant in the 2006 Junior 8 Summit. They
all wished the Russian delegation well on their trip to the 2007 Junior 8
Summit.

The Russian delegation will meet again on May 31 in St. Petersburg to be
fully prepared for such an important life event for both them and Russia in
general. On June 2, the delegation will leave for Germany.

NEWS / PROJECTS: Children's Film Shot on Location (NAMIBIA / GERMANY / POLAND)

Namibia: Children's Film Shot on Location

Windhoek

During the first two weeks of April, a group of Namibian, German and Polish students based themselves at Baumgartsbruhn, a primary school just outside Windhoek, to work on a very unique project producing a short feature film for children.

The film is based on a Polish children's book and chronicles the adventures of two very naughty school boys, who eventually set out to steal the moon because they believe they can become rich.

The film project is part of a cross-culture youth project, letting young people from different countries learn from each other - said Janusz Hamerski, screenplay-writer and director, a Polish national, in an ART/Life interview.

"In 2006 we had the idea of filming a story based on the Polish children's book 'Von Zweien, die den Mond stibitzen wollen' - loosely translated this means 'About two people who wanted to steal the moon' with Namibian pupils," he said.

OPPORTUNITIES: The First Sarajevo Talent Campus Call for Entries

The First Sarajevo Talent Campus Call for Entries

Sarajevo Film Festival has the pleasure to announce that the call for entries for the First Sarajevo Talent Campus begins on May 21, 2007.

Young filmmakers and students from the Region can apply via an online application form which is available from May 21 to June 21, 2007.

SARAJEVO TALENT CAMPUS

The First Sarajevo Talent Campus, a new educational programme dedicated to young filmmakers from South-eastern Europe, will be held from 20 to 25 August, 2007, as part of the 13th Sarajevo Film Festival. SFF is organising this project in cooperation with the Berlinale Talent Campus (www.berlinale-talentcampus.de) and the Berlin International Film Festival. Sarajevo Talent Campus will gather distinguished film professionals from the Region and from all over the world. They will give lectures and practical workshops for young, talented filmmakers in three different film disciplines – directing, production and acting.

"The main goal is to create a platform to provide a unique opportunity for young talented authors to learn and improve their knowledge by working with the most prominent representatives of film industry in the Region and worldwide. In addition to that, the Sarajevo Talent Campus will offer its participants access to the global film network" said Mirsad Purivatra, Director of the Sarajevo Film Festival.

Purivatra reminded that following successful rounding up of its programmes, Sarajevo Film Festival also developed an industrial section of the Festival through the CineLink Co-Production Market.

"We are now ready to start developing a new segment of the Festival with the aim to create conditions necessary for additional education and specialisation of young talents coming from this part of Europe. The well-established model of the Berlinale Talent Campus is simply the ideal way to realise this project" Purivatra said.

Results of the Berlinale Talent Campus speak for themselves and do justify selection and implementation of this model to Sarajevo Talent Campus: during the past five years, the Berlinale Talent Campus hosted more than 300 international film experts and film artists, as well as around 2.500 of young filmmakers from more than 120 countries. Many participants of this Campus have in the meantime realised their projects and presented them at prestigious festivals all over the world – many of them taking home awards for their works.

Berlin International Film Festival was happy to cooperate with the SFF and with Sarajevo Talent Campus as a branch of Berlinale Talent Campus. This is another conformation of the indisputable position of the Sarajevo Film Festival as the centre of regional film industry and a prestigious meeting point for film professionals coming from the region and from all over the world.

"We are extremely happy that a New Talent Campus Abroad initiative has found a new home base in Sarajevo, a festival known as a highly attractive hub for Eastern European filmmaking",  said Dieter Kosslick, the Director of the Berlin International Film Festival.

Speaking about the reasons to start a new form of cooperation between Sarajevo Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival, Kosslick pointed out: "As most of you are aware of: very friendly and highly productive ties between our two festivals are already existing, namely between CineLink and the Berlinale Co-Production Market, as well as between the Sarajevo TeenArena and Generations, the section of our festival for children and young adults' films. Of course, these bounds have helped to spark off the idea to form this latest cooperation."

Ending his official statement on the occasion of launching the Sarajevo Talent Campus, Kosslick wished the partners – talents and experts – an inspiring, encouraging and joyful Campus during the forthcoming Sarajevo Film Festival. "As for long term expectations: we are very much looking forward to eventually welcome the Sarajevo Talent Campus participants also in Berlin – with their future projects to be marketed and films to be screened and celebrated" stated Kosslick.

The first Sarajevo Talent Campus will be open to young filmmakers and final year students at Film Academies from: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia, Serbia, Turkey and Kosovo.  Some 70 young filmmakers are expected to take part in the first Sarajevo Talent Campus.  We will invite applications from 21 May to 21 June 2007, and the final selection of participants will be announced on 5 July 2007.

PROJECTS: Media group aims to teach youth to empower themselves (GUYANA)

Media group aims to teach youth to empower themselves

Youth Media Guyana (YMG) was launched on Tuesday with the aim of empowering the country's youth by equipping them with the skills necessary to express themselves.

YMG is the brainchild of six youths, two of whom are media workers at the National Communications Network (NCN) and who attended the Kids & Docs Festival in Paramaribo, Suriname last December. The festival included television, radio, print and rap workshops with the aim of allowing youths from within Caricom to actively access resources geared to assist in youth expression. After participating in the workshop the group said they realised that youth expression and representation and access to the media are severely lacking in Guyana. They resolved to become the core group for youth media advocacy in Guyana which resulted in the formation of YMG.

GAMES: 'Food Force' Video Game Sweeps Northern Europe

'Food Force' Video Game Sweeps Northern Europe

As Europe's largest games industry event gets underway in Sweden, "Food Force," the world's first humanitarian video game for children, is celebrating the launch of three new language versions, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced.

"Children have very few opportunities to understand the realities of a hungry world. By engaging children in a fun and creative way, 'Food Force' will help children become better global citizens – now and in the future," said John Powell, WFP Deputy Executive Director for Fundraising and
Communications.

In the days leading up Nordic Game 2007, the gathering of video game professionals from the Nordic region and the world, WFP presented translations of the game about hunger in Finnish, Norwegian and German.

These come in addition to versions of the game in Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian, Polish, Hungarian and the original English. Swedish, Arabic, Portuguese and Spanish are under development.

Launched in 2005, as the world's first humanitarian video game, Food Force explores the problem of global hunger and the logistics of humanitarian aid work, and is designed for children aged 8 to 13. The game is available as a free internet download from www.food-force.com, where it has been downloaded about 5 million times.

RESEARCH: 10,000 Kiwi teens to be quizzed on internet tablets (NEW ZEALAND)

10,000 Kiwi teens to be quizzed on internet tablets

By COLIN MARSHALL - NZPA | Monday, 30 April 2007

Researchers investigating the health of New Zealand teenagers are turning rather appropriately to cutting edge "internet tablet" technology for surveying secondary students in what they believe is a world-first.

The Youth '07 project, by the adolescent health research group at the University of Auckland, is to collect data from over 10,000 students on all facets of their health and wellbeing.

Researcher Simon Denny said comparable research in 2000 had found New Zealand teenagers doing "pretty well" but the new survey would cover some new areas of concern – cellphone use, gambling, obesity and P (methamphetamine).

Using the tablets – with a touch-sensitive colour screen and measuring only about 14cm by 8cm – was believed to be a world-first, and followed nicely on from the laptops used in 2000, which were then leading-edge.

Dr Denny said using the new technology was particularly appropriate for teenagers and would help accuracy and in keeping the data confidential.

"Young people do like using these technologies."

NEWS / TV REGULATIONS: Reform of European television rules one step closer

Reform of European television rules one step closer
Cultura - 08-05-2007 - 05:05
The reform of the European television came one step closer when the Committee on Culture and Education decided on Tuesday to accept a draft second reading compromise reached with the Council presidency on the Audiovisual Media Services Directive.

The new legislation aims to update the 1997 Television without Frontiers directive, now to be dubbed the Audiovisual Media Services Directive, to bring it into line with new developments in audiovisual technology and advertising.  The Commission's proposal is intended to create a level playing field for public and private broadcasters and independent producers.  It also aims to widen the scope of the rules to include new media.

(...)

The compromise reached between the rapporteur and the German Presidency includes the following decisions:
  • On the issue of product placement, the placement of a specific product would be allowed in a limited range of programmes, and then only under strict rules. Product placement would be banned in "news and current affairs programmes, children's programmes, documentaries and programmes of advice".  "Product integration and thematic placement shall be prohibited in principle." Before a programme containing product placement starts and when it ends, a special signal should appear. This signal should also appear before commercial breaks.
  • (...)
  • There will be a special code of conduct towards children also fully integrated in the binding paragraphs of the legislation. The code of conduct should avoid for instance junk food commercials aimed at children.
  • (...)

  • Procedure: Co-decision, Second reading -- Plenary Vote: July (possibly)

EVENTS / COMPETITIONS: Morgan Stanley and UNICEF Announce U.S. Delegates to the 2007 Junior 8 Competition

Morgan Stanley and UNICEF Announce U.S. Delegates to the 2007 Junior 8 Competition

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) and UNICEF are pleased to announce the winning teens chosen to participate on behalf of the United States in the 2007 Junior 8 Competition. Students from The Harker School in San Jose, California were selected from more than 500 entrants to represent the United States in the international competition. The team will be traveling to Germany in June.

Junior 8 ("J8") is the youth event linked to the G8 Summit and was jointly developed by Morgan Stanley and UNICEF. The J8 program provides free, multi-lingual resources on topical global issues to teachers and students worldwide, and enables young people ages 13 to 17 to become involved in the topics that concern the G8 countries and the broader global community. Drawing from their knowledge, understanding and perspectives of these global issues, student teams compete via an essay contest for the opportunity to represent their country at the J8 Summit.

For 2007, the German G8 Presidency and the regional government are hosting the J8 Summit in Wismar, Germany, from June 3-9, 2007. The Summit will be attended by 64 young people from the G8 countries selected by a joint process developed by Morgan Stanley and UNICEF, and 10 young people from other parts of the world selected by UNICEF. The selection process ran from January-March 2007 and was open to all young people, age 13 to 17, in the G8 countries. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pledged to include a meeting with J8 delegates in the official G8 agenda in 2007.

WASHINGTON, May 7, 2007 — The World Bank has selected 20 finalists who will compete for small grants for innovative youth projects in Europe and Central Asia (ECA). The grants, which range from EUR 5,000 to EUR 10,000, will finance projects addressing pertinent issues faced by youth in the ECA region, such as youth citizenship and employment. The winners of the ECA Youth Conference Innovation Grants Competition and Showcase will be announced at a major youth conference in Rome on May 24, 2007.

The grants competition is organized in association with the Europe and Central Asia Youth Conference 2007, taking place in Rome, Italy on May 21 - 25. The competition aims at identifying and supporting innovative, small-scale, and cutting-edge projects that are developed and implemented by young people. The finalists were selected from among 129 eligible entries, representing a wide range of ECA countries, including Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia, Tajikistan, Belarus, Kyrgyz Republic, Serbia, Bulgaria, Uzbekistan, and Moldova.

All finalists will present their projects to a competition jury and to youth conference participants. In parallel, past winners of the World Bank Development Marketplaces for Europe and Central Asia, whose projects fall under one or both competition themes, will showcase their project results, share their experiences, and demonstrate the impact small grants can have on youth-focused projects.

OPINIONS: Children's media skew gender

Children's media skew gender

Wed May 2, 6:56 AM ET

Few people know that my first "acting" role was The Rifleman, from 1960s TV. As little girls, my best friend and I wanted to be brave like the characters on that show, so when we played in her backyard I was often Lucas McCain, and she would be the son, Mark.

We didn't realize at the time how odd it was that there were few female role models, or how marginalized or simply invisible female characters were, especially in children's entertainment. Today, gender distortion remains entrenched in movies and TV aimed at young children like mine.

In 2005-06, the University of Southern California's Annenberg School of Communication conducted the most comprehensive analysis of children's movies and TV programming ever done. The research was commissioned by See Jane, a program I established at the non-profit Dads & Daughters to reduce gender imbalance and stereotyping in children's media.
