TV / PROJECTS: TV programme targets Arabic youth (JORDAN)

TV programme targets Arabic youth
By Tudor Lomas
Saturday, 28 April 2007

The Shababnews production team
On the face of it, setting up a news programme for young teenagers on state-run TV in Jordan seems a long way from the cutting-edge of pioneering, independent media, but nothing like it has been done before in the Arab world.

Youth news TV can offer a realistic way of making a journalistic impact in countries where the prospects are otherwise pretty bleak.

Such news is often not taken seriously by the authorities; this gives a chance to slip beneath the radar and access a crucial and influential audience.

Shababnews is a locally-produced news offering in Arabic which cuts through the bland to offer quality reports on subjects such as child labour, recycling plastic bags and the curse of diabetes.

In Jordan 50% of the population is under 20 years old.  Not only are they the future, but these young teenagers are de facto mentors for their younger brothers and sisters.  In many families they help their parents and older relatives to decode a rapidly changing world.

OPINIONS / ARTICLES: Nunatsiavut government is proactive in dealing with suicide

Nunatsiavut government is proactive in dealing with suicide

Reader - The Labradorian

Dear Editor:

I am writing to express my concerns regarding the article printed in The Labradorian, April 16, 2007 entitled "Are Inuit suicide problems being ignored by the Nunatsiavut Government".

As President of the Nunatsiavut Government it was with great shock and disappointment that I read this article. The Nunatsiavut Government's Department of Health & Social Development (DHSD) has made suicide a priority and has recently sought funding for several new initiatives.

It is very concerning that an article such as this would appear without any consultation with the government department that has been working so diligently towards finding ways to combat the devastating problem that has touched so many of our people.

The Nunatsiavut Government has made the issues of suicide, alcohol and drugs a priority since its inception and even before. This was made evident by the public consultations held by our government last spring.

(...)

Youth who are participating in support groups, activities, media projects, traveling across Canada to work with other youth on this issue and volunteering their time, feel that their contribution has not been recognized. Nunatsiavut Government's Deputy Minister of Health and Social Development just returned from Halifax where she presented along with two youth from Hopedale on our initiatives related to suicide prevention and they were highlighted as the best in Atlantic Canada. Hopedale has a suicide support group attended twice a week by approximately 30 youth.

The DHSD purchased video equipment and provided training in each Labrador Inuit community for one week to build youth media teams. The final cut of these videos is being completed as we speak. This was identified by our youth as a priority and also by the National Inuit Youth Council.

(...)

William Andersen - President, Nunatsiavut Government

Young Gambian Delegate Returns from 5 WSMC , UNICEF One Minutes Workshop

Young Gambian Delegate Returns from 5 WSMC Summit.

Banjul, 14 April, 2007 - By Alieu A Bah

The 5TH World Summit on Media for Children (5 WSMC) and the UNICEF One
Minute Workshop were held in Sandton City Johannesburg, South Africa from
March 19 to 28, 2007 on the theme MEDIA AS TOOL FOR PEACE AND DEMOCRACY. The
World Summit occurs every three years. This year, the underlying goals and
objectives are in line with the objectives of the World
Summit Foundation on Media for Children, the United Nations Millennium
Declaration and the priorities outlined in the Millennium Development Goals
and UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Summit - launched in 1995 in Australia - offered a global platform
celebrating the rich tapestry of children's media Abdou Jatta, President of
Young People in the Media represented The Gambia and was accompanied to the
summit by Ms Begay Downes Thomas, UNICEF Communications Consultant.

The UNICEF One Minute Workshop gave the young delegates the opportunity to
write, film, edit and produce One Minute Video clips about their lives,
dreams, rights and fears. The Workshop also
equipped the young delegates with basic training in camera, story
development, editing skills as well as planning, participation and team
work.

A broad range of themes and issues including young people's right to
expression, the role of the internet in teenagers' lives, the plight of
street children and personal creativity were explored by the
young delegates. And, participants presented their films and experience to
other child delegates at the opening ceremony of the Summit.

The Gambian delegate produced two One Minute films entitled Media Waves and
Article 17. Both of his films focused on children's rights to freedom of
expression, access to information and the mass media. The YPM president was
also accorded the opportunity to address the summit on the role of the young
people in the Gambian media. Other participants were from Israel, Colombia,
Brazil,
Nigeria and South Africa.

In his presentation, Abdou Jatta, said the media plays a major role in
global peace and democracy which can ensure children to make well-informed
decisions. He added that the media in The Gambia has always been vigilant on
issues relating to the rights and wellbeing of its young citizenry.

Describing the media as a `powerful tool' in the propagation of global peace
and democracy, he further added that the presentation or misrepresentation
of informations by the media can greatly influence decisions taken on behalf
of children.

NEWS: 26 young Europeans witness on the ground the European Commission's development assistance in Rwanda

20/4/2007
26 young Europeans witness on the ground the European Commission's development assistance in Rwanda

Between 17 and 21 April, 26 young Europeans aged 16-18 and their teachers will visit Rwanda with the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel. There they will meet young Rwandans and get to know their country and history. They will also gain direct experience of the added value Europe brings to the world via the Commission's development and humanitarian aid policy. The young people from the 25 Member States of the EU are winners of the Development Youth Prize awarded at the first European Development Days held in Brussels in November 2006.

Development is not just a matter for experts, political institutions and NGOs: it concerns all responsible and committed citizens, especially young people. Solidarity, both between Europeans and beyond EU borders, is one of the fundamental values underpinning European integration. Development aid and humanitarian aid are two of the fields where European citizens want "more Europe", as shown by the Eurobarometer.

In 2006, 751 committed young Europeans and their teachers took part in this competition by submitting contributions highlighting European cooperation in Africa. The Prize was organised by European Schoolnet with the support of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Development. National juries, composed of experts and representatives of the Member States' development and education ministries, selected one winner and one runner-up per country, who participated in the European Development Days in Brussels in November 2006.

RESOURCES: Education and the media

Education and the media

17-04-2007 (UNESCO)

How can the media promote education for all? Where are the most reliable sources for journalists? What are the stories behind the statistics?

With Global Action Week approaching (23-29 April), UNESCO is promoting its media training resource, 'Education Makes News', to help journalists tackle these questions.

Featuring education stories on the front page has always been a challenge to many educators and development workers. These stories are regarded as "soft" news stories compared to "hard" news stories related to crime and violence, conflict, disasters etc. Education stories are stereotyped as being too mundane and therefore do not attract the attention and interest of media audiences worldwide. But it is the news stories on education, literacy, health, nutrition and similar areas that make a difference in the lives of people, especially the poorest of the poor.

- From the foreword of 'Education makes news'. This UNESCO training kit was produced to encourage the media to highlight Education for All (EFA) goals.

RESEARCH: Cyber-bullying remains big problem for Canadian youth: Survey

Cyber-bullying remains big problem for Canadian youth: Survey

Tobi Cohen, Canadian Press

TORONTO (CP) - Kate Wilkes hasn't personally fallen victim to cyber-bullying, but she did watch it tear apart the social fabric of a classroom.

When a close friend of the 16-year-old Toronto high school student decided to pick on another girl over the Internet, the target of that cyber-bullying soon found her entire class turned against her.

BEIRUT: The arts, audiovisual media in particular, have several flavors and functions - ranging from decorative entertainment to the avant-garde and from the political to the pedagogical. Having just devoted itself to a few days of avant-garde work with Video Avril, Masrah al-Madina is this week turning itself over to engaged pedagogy with the International Film Festival for Children and Youth (IFFCY), organized by Al-Jana, the Arab Resource Center for Popular Arts.

EDITORIALS: It's good to text but it's better to talk

Editorial: It's good to text but it's better to talk

By Andy Hillier, features editor, Young People Now andy.hillier@haymarket.com - 18/04/07
Just because young people are willing to vote for their favourite X Factor contestant using their mobile phone, it doesn't mean they will use such methods to provide feedback on more serious matters. Young people realise that certain issues require careful consideration - perhaps even discussion with a responsible adult - and sometimes a more detailed response than a text message will allow. Equally, with a standard text message costing from 10p, they will usually have to feel very strongly about a subject before using their precious phone credit or text allowance.

This week we report how the Hansard Society went to great lengths to encourage young people from 500 secondary schools and 200 community youth projects to submit evidence to a Home Affairs Select Committee on the criminal justice system via mobile phone (see p5). While this is laudable, only 101 young people registered to take part in the Citizen Calling project - out of which eight actually submitted evidence via mobile phone. We also report that the Frontier Youth Trust is setting up an initiative to allow young people to leave a message for God (see p2).
