Will Africa Benefit From the Rise of Personal Media?

February 26, 2007 04:44 PM

Young people in West are increasingly finding Africa's endless cycle of
hunger, violence and disease unacceptable. This can be seen in increased
travel to Africa and massive interest in campaigns like Save Darfur and Make
Poverty History. At the same time, these youth are increasingly turning to
personal media (blogs, vlogs, podcasts, wikis), instead of mainstream media,
to shape their world view. One important question of our time is how do we
harness the emerging power of emerging technologies to give youth a richer
picture of the problems and opportunities in Africa, while also enticing
them to act in coherent and effective ways.

NEWS: Zamoof! A New National Children's Magazine

FEBRUARY 23, 2007 - 18:31 ET

Zamoof! A New National Children's Magazine

A children's magazine with a new angle, full of everything kids love but also designed to educate youth in making healthy & safe choices now and prepare them for their teen years ahead

Attention: Books Editor, Education Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Lifestyle Editor, Media Editor

KELOWNA, BC, NEW CANADIAN CHILDREN'S PUBLICATION--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 23, 2007) - Have you ever met a man who had the head of a moose? Some kids have! They are referring to Bogart, a talk show host in a new National Children's magazine that just released its first issue. Along with Bogart there is an energetic sports writer dog 'Crazer', skateboarding teen 'Blake' and 'Jessica' who flies around the world on a butterfly. "I compare the magazine's format with giving kids their vitamins along with their cheezies" says founder TeLeni Koochin of Kelowna, BC. "Its content is first fun and entertaining but has a strong underlying purpose and that is helping youth make safe and healthy choices now and the teen years ahead". Zamoof is for readers ages eight to 13 years. Along with fun pages, movie reviews, comics and stories, Zamoof features a regular editorial from the RCMP and promotes CRIME STOPPERS and KID'S HELP. Being a mother of four and teacher herself, when TeLeni came up with the concept of the magazine she knew she wanted education to play a major role. Many classrooms have already participated in the magazine from Atlin, a little town on the Yukon border, to Granville Ferry in Nova Scotia. "One of our features we are really excited about is our travelling Mystery story" comments Colleen Bates, School Coordinator for the magazine. It started in BC and a classroom from each province is writing the next chapter issue to issue. So, where did the name come from? Koochin comments "I figured it would be easier to make one up then try to think of something I liked. I knew I had it right when I tested it out on a few kids....it made them smile." The magazine is presently carried in most Chapter and Indigo stores. Schools are welcome to contact us to get involved!

TRAINING: Media meet in Kathmandu

Media meet in Kathmandu

Sixty media professionals from six countries in South Asia came together for a two-day workshop from February 8 - 9 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The workshop was organized by Save the Children Sweden and UNIFEM, to further children's and women's human rights in South Asia.

The workshop facilitated an exchange between the journalists and development professionals working with issues related to children and women, in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. At the workshop, professionals from the media and development sector focused on developing strategies to strengthen co-operation between the media and NGOs, to further children's and women's rights in the region.

The journalists devised their own working code of conduct and guidelines to further children's and women's rights through the media. The meeting concluded with an agreement to create a regional media network to strengthen children's and women's rights in South Asia. As a first step, an e-group will be launched, where media and development professionals can exchange ideas and information towards furthering these rights through the media.

With the skilled facilitation by Ms. Arjum Wajid, freelance trainer/researcher from MediaWise Trust, UK, and the hard work and coordination of Neha Bhandari and her team from the Save the Children Sweden, Regional Office for South and Central Asia, the workshop progressed smoothly with positive results.

Save the Children Sweden, Regional Office for South and Central Asia, together with UNIFEM are committed to coordinating and strengthening the regional media network.

UNIFEM is also supporting and encouraging the growth of national media coalitions in various South Asian countries.

COMPUTERS: In debate about violent PC games, Germany plans to ramp up youth protection

In debate about violent PC games, Germany plans to ramp up youth protection

In the current debate concerning violent computer games, the state of Bavaria is not alone in proposing new legislation to make the German Penal Code more strict and add a new section 131a to the Code. Now, Germany's Family Minister Ursula von der Leyen and her colleague Armin Laschet (both from the CDU) from North Rhine / Westphalia have announced that the federal government and state governments will be providing better protection to children and adolescents from violent computer games. But unlike the proposal from Bavaria to implement a new clause in the German Penal Code, they plan to extend the criteria in the Youth Protection Act to cover a wider range of violent scenes in computer games.

The debate about violent computer games flared up again after the massacre at a school in the German town of Emsdetten, reaching even the highest level of politics. While Germany's Minister of Justice Brigitte Zypries (SPD) believes that the country's regulatory power granted by the Youth Protection Act, the Agreement to Protect Minors in the Media (Jugendmedienstaatsvertrag), and the industry's good-faith self-monitoring is sufficient, Bavaria's Home Secretary Günther Beckstein (CSU) wants to have the German parliament pass a law banning such games outright. At the Council of European Home Secretaries and Ministers of Justice, Beckstein also called for a united European front. The EU is also talking about harmonizing penalties and coming up with a joint "blacklist."

OPPORTUNITIES: UNICEF and Morgan Stanley Begin Selection Process for Junior 8 Summit

UNICEF and Morgan Stanley Begin Selection Process for Junior 8 Summit

NEW YORK/LONDON  9 February 2007 - UNICEF and the Morgan Stanley International Foundation announced today the beginning of the selection process for 13 to 17 year-old young people to attend  the Junior 8 2007 Summit ("J8 Summit") in Wismar, Germany which will be held in conjunction with the meeting of world leaders at the G8 Summit Germany 2007 this June.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who met with eight young people from the J8 during the G8 Summit in St Petersburg last year, has pledged to host a meeting with J8 delegates and G8 leaders in Germany this June.

Junior 8 website (external site, opens in a new window)

UNICEF and the Morgan Stanley International Foundation first teamed up to facilitate youth participation at the G8 in 2006.

Justin Simpson, Chairman of the Morgan Stanley International Foundation, said: "As we have seen in previous years, young people the world over feel passionately about the environmental, social and economic issues facing our world today.  We are delighted that the G8 leaders have seen the value of the J8 programme in inspiring young people to engage themselves in these issues and look forward to hearing the outputs of another successful Summit in June."

"We are pleased to be working with Morgan Stanley International Foundation to include the opinions and perspectives of young people at the G8 summit," said UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman, who attended last year's J8 near St. Petersburg. "This year the youth participants at the J8 will discuss economic development in Africa; prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS; climate change and energy efficiency; the global economy, including intellectual property rights and corporate social responsibility."

The selection process calls on groups of young people from G8 countries to submit their entries to a national panel by March 2007.  Morgan Stanley and UNICEF are offering young people and teachers up-to-date online teaching material in all six core G8 languages.  The winning team will be judged on their recommendations for the G8 leaders.  In addition to the 64 young people representing the G8 countries, ten children from developing countries will also be chosen to participate.

RESEARCH / TV: TV viewing is up, despite online video

TV viewing is up, despite online video

And that's true even among young audiences

Feb 8, 2007

Advertisers get in a lather, understandably, whenever a new threat arises that could challenge television and hurt viewing levels in the process, especially among the young. The latest perceived threat is online video, as available on sites such as YouTube.

But advertisers have little to worry about, at least for now and perhaps for some time.

Two separate research studies, from Magna Global and Leichtman Research Group in Durham, N.H., show that the online video craze isn't nearly as big as it sometimes seems. And more significant to advertisers, it's having no effect on TV viewing.

Kids are actually watching more TV, not less, even with the multitude of other options, including iPods, videogames and online video, according to the Magna study.

RESEARCH: 4 in 10 Kids See Adult Material Online: Study By Randy Dotinga

4 in 10 Kids See Adult Material Online: Study

By Randy Dotinga
HealthDay Reporter
Mon Feb 5, 2:02 PM ET

MONDAY, Feb. 5 (HealthDay News) -- More than 40 percent of teens and preteens surveyed say they've recently come across nudity and pornography on the Internet, and most say they weren't looking for it, according to a study released today.

Those numbers were highest among older boys: Nearly four in 10 males aged 16-17 said they'd gone to adult sites on purpose within the past year, compared to just eight percent of girls at the same age.'

PROJECTS / NEWS: Children's Express relaunches under new name - HEADLINERS

Children's Express relaunches under new name

Children's Express, the unique youth news agency charity set up in 1995, will be re-launching as Headliners at a ceremony at BAFTA on Piccadilly on 30th January.

Rt Hon Peter Hain MP, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and Wales, will be the guest speaker at the event, which will showcase some of the successful work that has been produced over the previous 12 years, as well as look to the future.

2007 sees the start of an ambitious three-year expansion programme for the charity, partly-funded by a £900,000 Big Lottery grant, which will grow existing activities and establish Headliners in new areas including the North West, West Midlands and the South-East.

The name change came about after a six-month consultation period with many of the hundreds of young people that the charity works with. Headliners Director Fiona Wyton said: "We work with a wide range of young people, some who felt uncomfortable with the term Children. We also wanted to move away from sounding like a print-based organisation as we have moved into creating much more audio/video and new media output."

In 2006, Children's Express sent two reporters to Kenya to report on how young people were involved in fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic in that country. Their report was shown on both BBC News 24 and Sky News, and they were interviewed on ITV News and BBC News 24.

Other highlights for the year include appearances on Radio 4 You and Yours, on BBC World Service as part of the Generation Next season and published articles in a number of newspapers including the Guardian and New Internationalist magazine.

In February 2006 Children's Express started producing three columns each week for the Reach for the Sky website, part of an ongoing partnership with Sky that has seen the satellite broadcaster provide mentoring and training for Children's Express members.

The event will also be the official launch of the new website, www.headliners.org, which holds an archive of nearly 1,000 stories that have been produced by Children's Express since 1995. The multimedia site also contains copies of recent television and radio work that Children's Express members have been involved in, including reports shown on BBC News 24, Sky News and Channel Five news.

NEWS / COMPUTERS: Online communities: A life online

Online communities: A life online

07/02/07
Social networking web sites such as MySpace and Bebo have grown to play a major role in young people's lives. Caspar van Vark asks whether the youth sector should view them as an opportunity or a threat.

Venture into the home of a teenager today and the chances are they won't be watching TV or reading magazines, but sat in front of a computer, chatting online to friends or sharing videos. In fact, they'll have almost an entire social life online.

This phenomenon of "social networking" has grown enormously over the past few years to the point where an estimated seven out of 10 young people are now using these web sites (see box out).

TRAINING / RESOURCES: BBC Course

Great resource!!!

BBC Training & Development for Broadcast

Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007

Aspiring journalists should thank our friends on the other side of the pond for some more free training. The BBC has created some free online courses for broadcast. The site primarily is for folks working with the BBC, but we think it was mighty nice of them to share it with others.

The course list includes shooting, lighting, using DV cameras, video production and sound mixing -- to name a few. Most courses are relatively short and take about an hour, although there are one or two that take a bit more time.

We completed the Microphones for Sound and Radio course. It was very informative and interactive and even offered a printable transcript, so we can keep the info handy without having to revisit the course every time.

Based on the course we took, we give this site a thumbs up on simplifying and explaining some otherwise intimidating technology.

You'll find the complete course list here: http://www.bbctraining.com/onlineCourses.asp
