NEWS: Voices of Youth and the International Children's Day of Broadcasting launches Media Magic Digest

Voices of Youth and the International Children's Day of Broadcasting launches Media Magic Digest

NEW YORK, 27 December 2006 – UNICEF's Voices of Youth (http://www.unicef.org/voy/) and the International Children's Day of Broadcasting launched today a new online multimedia newsletter which showcases media projects by, with and for children called Media Magic Digest http://www.unicef.org/voy/explore/media/explore_3448.html

Media Magic Digest is a quarterly e-newsletter for people interested in how young people create media around the world and aims to promote dialogue between broadcasters and young media enthusiasts.

The inaugural issue shares stories of original youth-driven programmers produced in different media, including photography, video, radio and print.

"UNICEF has long recognized that the media can be a potent force for change. Media Magic Digest is an attempt to harness the media's influence for the good of children everywhere. The e-newsletter highlights media efforts that involve, inform, and empower young people as well as broadcaster," said Stephen Cassidy, Chief of the Internet, Broadcast and Image Section. "We want adults and children around the globe to share ideas and be inspired by the work of others to create their own imaginative approaches to all media disciplines."

All children have the right to freedom of expression, as affirmed in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The projects featured in the Media Digest are compelling examples of what adults and children can do together to create meaningful, positive media experiences for children.

ICDB, celebrated on the second Sunday of every December, is a day when broadcasters around the world "Tune in to Kids".  They air quality programming for and about children. The Day is a joint initiative of UNICEF and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

DEBATES: Youth Swears by the Internet - Media Accused them of Inactivity

Youth Swears by the Internet - Media Accused them of Inactivity

Yesterday, December 20, the NGO Infocentre from Skopje, in cooperation with the Youth Education Forum (MOF), organized a debate on the topic ?Do the Traditional Media Lose the Young Audiences?? The debate took place at the Club of the Members of Parliament in Skopje.

In addition to the two opposed debate teams of MOF, who presented the positive and negative view on the topic, editors from several media in Macedonia, journalists, youth organizations? representatives and students participated in the debate.

The debate thesis were presented by Branko Gerovski, Editor-in-Chief of ?Spic? daily; Aco Kabranov, Editor in ?Kanal 5? TV news programmes; Nazif Rasidi from BBC; and Roberto Belicanec, Executive Director of the Media Development Centre.

The debate concentrated on the thesis that the traditional print and electronic media ? daily newspapers, television and radio stations ? lose the young audience that turns, as is natural, towards the new media that use internet as carrying platform, to get information they need and they are interested in.

EVENTS: UNICEF Russia celebrates 60th Anniversary with children at Human Rights Film Festival

UNICEF Russia celebrates 60th Anniversary with children at Human Rights Film Festival

UNICEF?s birthday was ?Cinema on Guard for Children?s Rights Day? at the Stalker Film Festival, Moscow, this year.

On 11 December, more than two thousand visitors to the Moscow House of Cinema enjoyed a full programme of films about children, including the celebrated ?All the Invisible Children? produced by eight world-renowned film directors and first screened at 62nd Venice Biennale Film Festival.

UNICEF Representative in the Russian Federation, Carel de Rooy, addressed the opening ceremony saying ?Among the milestones during the 60 years of UNICEF?s  work I would like to mention the Nobel Prize for Peace awarded to UNICEF in 1965, the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the first-ever World Summit for Children in 1990.?  He went on to talk about another major UNICEF event which took place this year in Russia, the historic participation of eight children in the G8 summit. For the first time in the summit?s history, children met with the eight G8 leaders for a substantive discussion in St Petersburg.

UNICEF awarded prizes to the best three films made by young filmmakers from a total of over 130 films.

Katya Orlova, a young film director from an orphanage in Yaroslavl received a prize for a film called ?Arsenal of Hope?. At the award ceremony Katya said: ?A child in an orphanage does not have a mother, but has a dream. When we were discussing our film we thought that this dream is the most important thing for us and we made a film about this.?

RADIO / ICDB: West African children take to the airwaves to make their voices heard

West African children take to the airwaves to make their voices heard

By Patrick Slavin and Alusine Savage

Each December, UNICEF?s International Children?s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB)  involves young people worldwide in media programming and production, giving them a chance to express their opinions on major issues and develop new skills. Here is one in a series of stories about youth media.

MONROVIA, Liberia and FREETOWN, Sierra Leone, 18 December 2006 ? This year?s ICDB on 10 December served as clarion call for broadcasters in Liberia and Sierra Leone to engage the voices of young people, providing them with a platform to air their views on reversing the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

?Who?s doing the 8 o?clock news?? producer Sharon Vincent Avorkliyah shouted out to a hallway jam-packed with child broadcasters at the studios of United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) Radio.

?I am,? said Richie Kpadeh, 15, with his schoolbag tucked snugly around his shoulders.

With a handwritten script, Richie and eight other children kicked off a full day of children?s programming on UNMIL Radio. Their professional, one-hour newscast featured interviews with Liberia?s Ministers of Gender and Development, a former Minister of Education, the head of UNMIL?s HIV/AIDS Section and UNICEF Representative in Liberia Rozanne Chorlton.

In Liberia, ?a good day for the kids?

?This is exactly what the International Children?s Day of Broadcasting is all about ? the voices of children being heard,? said UNMIL Radio Chief Joseph Roberts-Mensah. ?We turn over our station every year to children, and they do everything from news, judging a talent show and preparing a quiz contest to producing, writing and acting in dramas.?

Almost 200 Liberian children took part in programming on the 2006 ICDB theme, UNITE FOR CHILDREN  UNITE AGAINST AIDS. ?And once again we want to thank UNICEF for its unflinching support and for helping to make ICDB a good day for the kids,? said Mr. Roberts-Mensah.

NEWS: Students make mobile phone news (UK)

Students make mobile phone news

School children have been using their mobile phones and iPods to make the news as part of a BBC project to engage students with journalism.

A class of 12 and 13-year-olds from Lilian Baylis Technology School in Lambeth, London transformed their personal gadgets into news-gathering device.

Year eight students snapped photographs using their mobile phones and combined them with radio reports, which they recorded using an iPod or a traditional microphone.

The result was a series of multi-media news reports available to download from the internet.

AWARDS: Youth producers from Zambia and Mexico win UNICEF/OneWorld radio prize

Youth producers from Zambia and Mexico win UNICEF/OneWorld radio prize

NEW YORK, 11 December 2006 ? Youth radio producers from Zambia and Mexico have won the 2006 UNICEF/OneWorld Radio Prize, presented by UNICEF and OneWorld Radio. The award is given to a radio programme produced by youth that reflects the 2006 theme ?UNITE FOR CHILDREN.  UNITE AGAINST AIDS.?  Awards are presented for the best feature (up to six minutes) and the best Public Service Announcement (PSA) and celebrate youth participation in media.

?Living with HIV,? by Jose Yesani of Zambia, took the feature prize. The four-minute piece tells the story of a young man discovering he?s HIV positive.  Yesani uses an animated monologue over a driving soundtrack to relay this man?s feelings on learning his diagnosis is not the end of his life.  Honourable mentions for features went to ?In the Mother?s Womb,? by Nikita Jain of India and ?Thembi?s AIDS Diary, ? by Thembi Ngubane of South Africa and Jonathan Richman of the USA.  ?In the Mother?s Womb? takes the unusual perspective of a baby in the womb of her HIV positive mother.  In ?Thembi?s AIDS Diary,? a young woman called Thembi relays her experiences of being HIV positive.

TRAINING: When a video camera is no longer a strange thing for an Acehnese

When a video camera is no longer a strange thing for an Acehnese
12-12-2006 (Jakarta)

A professional video camera was once used to be a strange thing for Hanum, a
young female university student from Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Let alone
various other devices related to camera that are usually used by
professionals to produce video documentary. But now those equipments are no
longer something strange to Hanum.
"Before, I understood nothing at all about video production. But through
this training workshop I have acquired a very useful skill for the
empowerment of myself in particular, and the people of Aceh in general," she
said with a happy voice and face, referring to the basic training on video
production that she just completed.

The training was organized by UNESCO's office in Jakarta from 23 to 28
November 2006 in Banda Aceh, , using funds donated by Switzerland through a
direct fund raising efforts made by UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, in the
aftermath of the tsunami that hit Aceh in December 2004. The training was
held at the Communication and Cultural Centre (CCC) in Banda Aceh that was
established in June by UNESCO Jakarta with support from UN OCHA's flash
appeal funds for tsunami.

The main objective of the training was to provide the participants with
basic skills on documentary video production, so that they can utilize the
skills to produce documentary on the richness of Aceh culture and the
resilience of its people to face challenges, including the tsunami, that can
be used as cultural expression.

Hanum now can play with the camera, and use it to shot subjects that
interest her. She finds the training was very useful. And she was not alone
in enjoying the usefulness of the training. There were 11 other
participants, most of them university students, who were selected to join
the training. The news on the training was announced through Radio Nikoya,
which was destroyed by the tsunami but rebuilt with UNESCO's assistance.

"I am so pleased too to see the enthusiam of the participants during the
training, and how fast they learned about something completely new to them,"
said the trainer, Anita Schillhorn Van Veen.

The two documentaries that the trainees produced during their training were
screened at the CCC on the final night which received a warm welcome by the
audience; some of them were ordinary people living nearby. There is another
good news: their works are also invited to be screened in a Documentary Film
Festival that will be held in Yogyakarta, mid December 2006.

"We hope this training will continue with an advance one," says Mahruza
Murdani, one of the participants who also joined the selected group for
Training for Trainer session.

EVENTS: Post-conflict role of Media discussed (NEPAL)

Post-conflict role of Media discussed   [ 2006-12-17 ]
By A Staff Reporter

KATHMANDU, Dec 16: Diplomats and experts Saturday highlighted the role of media and youths in the post-conflict era stating that both have a tremendous role in reshaping the nation?s vision and mitigating generational conflict through peaceful means.

They also asserted that media has been obsessed with political reporting filled with the cacophonous speeches of political leaders, thereby neglecting the genuine issues and legitimate rights of youths.

They were speaking at a seminar ?the Role of Youth and Media in Development: A New Perspective? jointly organised by The Telegraph Weekly and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), Nepal here.

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Nepal Nam Sang-Jung said that media could play the role of educating young people better than the governments in developing countries, thus contributing to economic growth and poverty reduction.

PROJECTS: Youth Media on the Shetlands

A NEW club set up by young people interested in film and media is to be launched in Shetland this winter.

The club is aimed at youths aged 11 to 23 who want to learn new skills and gain experience to get ahead in the media industry.

Shetland does not provide a lot of opportunity for those looking at getting a job in any kind of media because it is so remote, which means those that want the experience needed to get a job usually move away from the islands.

The youngsters behind the club have won the support of local arts agency Shetland Arts. Project manager Alex Cluness said: "The idea for the club came from the kids themselves, when I got a letter asking if we would help them set up their own independent group.

"It just so happened that next year the arts trust was planning on unveiling its first dedicated film programme, so we were delighted to get the ball rolling early."

The pending construction of a new cinema and music venue in Shetland means there will be a lot of film and media activity going on in the islands in the future.

The new Film and Media Club will encourage young people to develop their skills, so that it may lead to the chance of studying at film school during the summer.

The club is open to anyone that is looking at writing, filming and editing either as a career path, a hobby or just to have fun.

Shetland Arts and Shetland Islands Council's Youth Issues team will be running the club. They will start having meetings soon and have big ideas for the programme, including writing and producing a feature length film.

Other plans include giving young people with their own ideas the chance to work on their personal projects. There will also be the opportunity to work as part of a team on much bigger projects.

Mr Cluness said there was no reason why youngsters should not be given the chance of making their own feature film.

The club will hold regular workshops and courses run by local experts and enthusiasts. They also want to try and persuade key players from the industry at a national level to provide expertise.

A public meeting is being held in the Islesburgh Community Centre on 7 December at 7pm for people to air their views, suggestions and ideas for the club.

EVENTS: Seminar ''Being a young refugee in Europe today''

Seminar ''Being a young refugee in Europe today''

In Europe today, some young people were or are obliged to leave their homes, to abandon all the things which made their universe, to leave some parts of themselves behind.

?Refugees?, ?internally displaced people?, ?asylum seekers? can also be young people.

In the framework of the Campaign ? all different/all equal? , within the work priority on Human Rights and Intercultural dialogue, the Directorate of Youth and Sports of the Council of Europe organises on 6-11 December a seminar on ?being a young refugee in Europe today?, willing to stress that the European Youth Centres are also spaces for young refugees; that we cannot promote youth participation, youth policy, Human Rights and intercultural dialogue without listening, without hearing all young people, and therefore also young people who are refugees.

This activity also aims at developing networks and at formulating recommendations to be transmitted to European institutions.

At national level, the discussion about the situation of young refugees is starting to be on the top of the agenda; in Western Europe mostly under the question of ?the Asylum issue?. Some National Youth Councils, like the Flamish or the Dutch, have started working on this question. This seminar will be organised in strong collaboration with the UNHCR.

EVENTS: Armenian children's photos put spotlight on disability - "All of us are special, everyone is unique" photo exhibition at Yerevan Municipality

Armenian children's photos put spotlight on disability

Children Photo Exhibition entitled 'All of us are special, everyone is unique' has opened in Armenia's capital Yerevan. The exhibition is another opportunity to put the spotlight on disability - related issues to the general public through the eyes of Armenian children.

The photographs by children from Yerevan, Gyumri and other regions of Armenia illustrate the problems of people with disabilities to promote the idea of their integration in every aspect of economic and social life. The exhibition is part of series of events dedicated to the International Day of Disabled People organised by World Vision Armenia Child Protection Program in cooperation with UNICEF and Yerevan Municipality.

'These children need our friendly attitude more than assistance. Who says that having two hands and legs is a norm!' said Hrach Melkonyan, 15, the author of a couple of photos at the exhibition. 'My concern is that the people with disabilities should be under the shelter of our government, and I tried to reflect this idea in one of my photos depicting a disabled boy under the National Flag.'

In Armenia fear of being discriminated keeps children with disabilities away from social interactions, educational and development opportunities open to other children. Many end up in special institutions, which are often unable to work with them effectively for the lack of essential technical and methodological resources.

'I met a lot of children with disabilities, and I know how they feel. Many of them don't have friends; they are ashamed of interactions, and prefer living apart,' said Noushig Hovhannissyan, 16, a member of World Vision Armenia Gyumri Photo Club.

'Via the photos the children tried to bring into focus individuals who seek for integration in the society despite their abilities,' said Artashes Hakobyan, the head of World Vision Armenia Gyumri Photo Club.

In spite of some positive changes and efforts by the Government and NGOs to develop a legal basis and create more favorable economic and social conditions for persons with disabilities, there is still much to be done on the issue of people with disabilities in Armenia. Challenges range from lack of access to public buildings and transport to economic and social discrimination.

BROADCASTING: Children's Advocate Urges Parents to Monitor What Children Watch on Television (JAMAICA)

Children's Advocate Urges Parents to Monitor What Children Watch on Television
KINGSTON (JIS)

Saturday, December 02, 2006

Children's Advocate, Mary Clarke has called on parents to be more vigilant about what their children are allowed to watch on television, as increased displays of violence via this medium could directly and indirectly affect their behaviour and overall development.

Mrs. Clarke was speaking at the Broadcasting Commission's content standards workshop held at the Knutsford Court Hotel yesterday (Nov. 30).

She said that what children were exposed to on television had two types of effects on them: "direct effect due to the content being broadcasted and the second is the indirect effect due to the activity of watching".

?Our Voice?: UNICEF and Lebanon TV launch youth-produced series

By Serene Assir and Sabine Dolan

Each December, UNICEF's International Children?s Day of Broadcasting involves young people worldwide in media programming and production, giving them a chance to express their opinions on major issues and develop new skills. Here is one in a series of stories about youth media.

NEW YORK, USA, 1 December 2006 ? The Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC) and UNICEF are showcasing the viewpoints of the country?s million-strong youth audience with a new television series called ?Sawtna?, which means ?Our Voice?.

?Sawtna? is a one-of-a-kind initiative in the Middle East. Launched on 8 November, the programme features 8- to 10-minute documentaries that address issues affecting young people in the context of the country's complex social, political and economic climate.

What makes this show special is that it is created by a team of producers between the ages of 15 and 21.
